Grand Central Terminal: An interior view of the stunning main concourse of Grand Central Terminal and the iconic clock atop the information booth. Sadly intercity rail service here finished in 1991 with the transfer of remaining Amtrak services to Penn Station and only Metro North commuter service remains.
Devonshaw Siding: Between Arndean Cutting and Devonshaw Siding, to its east, the line rose onto an embankment which was supported by braced wooden walls built with sleepers and rails. Perhaps the company was trying to stay within its boundaries rather than have a broader embankment. This wooden wall was on the south side of the embankment.
Rishton: 150135, on a Preston to Colne stopping service, approaches the western portal of the short Rishton Tunnel, a few hundred yards to the west of the station itself. In the background is Rishton Reservoir, which the train has just crossed on a short causeway, and which supplies the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.
Auchendinny Tunnel: Looking out from Auchendinny Tunnel towards the former station in 1976.
Ness Islands Railway: Crossing the bridge on the Ness Islands Railway. The Ness Islands Railway website describes the bridge: 'The track was rerouted in 1989 to incorporate a superb 140ft span iron bridge, built in about 1837, which once was a footbridge on the River Ness near the railway site.'
Leeds: 91119 'Bounds Green Depot 1977 - 2017', in Inter City 'Swallow' livery, waits in the platform at Leeds around 17:30hrs on 27th September 2023
Leiston: 37140 has 7L70 the Willesden to Leiston empty flask heading down the Leiston branch near Leiston. The flask normally ran on a Thursday but not every Thursday, thus always a bit of a challenge to photograph. 37140 was fitted with RETB to work over the East Suffolk line. (One of about 5 from memory.)
Edinburgh Gateway [Tram]: Tram 273 takes the curve heading west into the Edinburgh Gateway tram stop, seen from the entrance to the Scotrail station on 1st October 2023. In the foreground are the lines to the depot.
Arndean Cutting: At the bottom of Arndean Cutting showing the retaining walls and largest bridge in a view looking west. This cutting caused the contractor considerable difficulty as it was cut through sand and the lower part of the cutting was lined with stone retaining walls. There was sufficient sand here that a sand and gravel quarry was developed later to the immediate north east of the cutting.
Lancaster: A gap in the foliage that lines the old Midland line to Morecambe, now a cycle track, allows a glimpse of 158759 as it accelerates onto Carlisle Bridge after leaving Lancaster with a Morecambe to Leeds service on 1st October 2023. Lancaster's ancient Priory Church and Castle look down on the scene.
Moreton (Dorset): A BR Standard 4MT 2-6-0 passing through Moreton station in the mid-1960s.
