Kirkby: The new arrangement at Kirkby, now that the Merseyrail services have been extended to Headbolt Lane. A signal has been installed, with an indicator for the two platforms at Headbolt Lane. See image [[77079]] for the same view in 2021 when there was a walkway here to link to the Northern trains to Wigan.

Headbolt Lane: There are three platforms at the new Headbolt Lane station. Two for Merseyrail services and a third for Northern trains towards Wigan behind the black screen. There are aspirations to extend the battery powered EMUs towards Wigan but the new fleet needs to be introduced across all the network first. 777146 stands at the buffers after arriving from Liverpool Central.

Headbolt Lane: A new station for Merseyrail. I am sure our much missed contributor John McIntyre would have made the opening day of Headbolt Lane on 4th October 2023, but here it is two weeks later. This stretch of line has had a second track laid again to support Merseyrail services. 777142 is at the platform, next to the staffed ticket office, newly arrived from Liverpool Central.

Saltoun: This old sign to Saltoun Station still stands at a road junction near Humbie. Strangely there is no corresponding indicator for Humbie or its station. East Lothian (County) Council should maybe consider cleaning it - just a wash, you understand, not a repaint-don't want to break the highway maintenance budget.

Kirkdale Servicing Depot: Class 777 EMUs, awaiting service entry, at the new Stadler EMU depot at Kirkdale, seen from the station footbridge as 507014 leaves towards Liverpool. The Stadler buildings occupy the site of the old EMU depot (See [[31181]]), which in turn was built on the site of Bank Hall steam shed. Since this picture was taken in December 2022 the new 777s have taken over Kirkby and Ormskirk services and are now being rolled out on the Southport and Wirral lines.

Arndean Cutting: Looking down on the missing bridge west of Arndean with the former DVR running from left (east) to right (west). The cutting walls for the roadway, realigned when the railway was built, can be seen. There is also a spoil heap (top centre) from ironstone mining activities dating from before the railway. There was a house here - Blairbane - which was swept away by the railway construction.
