Ashover (Butts): This gated field entrance was once the short driveway to Ashover Butts, terminus of the 2' gauge Ashover Light Railway that ran over seven winding miles from Clay Cross. It was built by Col. H Stephens and opened to passengers in 1925. Those services ceased just eleven years later but freight soldiered on until Butts quarry closed in 1950. An unusual feature of Ashover Butts was that, rather than running round, the whole train was turned on a nearby triangle ready for the return trip. Ashover is some distance from here but there was an intermediate halt at Salter Lane that better suited the village.

The railway in the foreground is rising on its approach to Dollar Viaduct. Note Castle Campbell which is above the village and in the hills in the background.
