Weymouth: Ex-Southern Railway Bulleid 'Merchant Navy' Pacific 35018 'British India Line' waiting to depart from Weymouth with the 17.24 return leg of the Railway Touring Company's 'The End of Southern Steam' railtour, on Sunday, 9th July 2023. This is one of a batch of 20 that entered service from Eastleigh shed in May 1945 and withdrawn from service in August 1964. It then spent 15 years at Woodham's scrapyard at Barry until purchased for preservation in November 1979 and found its way to the Mid-Hants Railway in March 1980. Restoration was protracted and it was 30th September 2017 before it ran its first main line tour from Carnforth to York.
Patricroft: The entrance to Patricroft station in September 2023. Stairs on the right lead to the Liverpool platform. Through the subway to reach the Manchester side. Most of the station buildings have been demolished but there are two modern shelters. The basic passenger service is hourly in each direction although many more trains pass through without stopping.
Dalgety Bay: 47812 is wreathed in steam as it backs up 60103, climbing away from Dalgety Bay, with the diverted 'Highland Express' heading for Aberdeen on 7 October 2023.
Dalgety Bay: 60103 'Flying Scotsman' runs through a wet Dalgety Bay with the 'Highland Express', originally planned to run to Inverness but diverted to Aberdeen because of the weather-related closure of the HML. It was running about twenty minutes late, not helped by having to follow a delayed Edinburgh – Perth stopper.
Dalgety Bay: 43182 and 43148 power the 12.07 from Aberdeen to Edinburgh as it approaches Dalgety Bay on 11 September 2023. The sharp-eyed might notice an orange jacket in the trees to the left. More pruning is being carried out on a project started in 2021.
Blackburn Siding: Looking south east at Blackburn Siding, a former sawmill siding, between Dumgoyne and Killearn stations.
Bowling: Flooding at Bowling station has covered the track entirely. Lines all over Scotland are closed as a result of heavy rain. Bowling previously flooded in late December 2022, see image [[83878]].
Bellside Junction: Bellside Junction signal box seen in early 1976. The track behind the box was the branch which ran to Chapelhall but had closed to goods in 1966. At the time the shot was taken a section at Cleland was retained as what I take to be a headshunt but if anyone has knowledge as to whether it was actually used to serve a local industrial site at some time I would be interested to know.
Hitchin: A4 60028 'Walter K Wigham' passing Hitchin, heading towards Kings Cross, in 1968.
Heaton Shed: Diary notes from my 1962 outing to Newcastle with the school railway club record that almost 30 ex-LNER Pacifics were in evidence in the Newcastle area. I do not know why A3 60061 'Pretty Polly' was the only one photographed, but I suppose pocket money did not allow much expenditure on camera film. Probably I thought that this King's Cross A3, in typically superb 'Top Shed' condition, was the star of the show.
Glenbeigh: A view of the abutments of the former bridge over the River Behy with Glenbeigh village and station off to the left. A car park is being formed in the foreground, which will serve the eastern end of the South Kerry Greenway from here to Cahirciveen. There is no plan to rebuild a bridge here.
Boat of Garten: Visiting the Strathspey Railway for their Autumn 2023 Steam Gala was 0-4-0ST 'BON ACCORD'. Built by Andrew Barclay Sons & Co at Kilmarnock in 1897, it operated in the Aberdeen Corporation Gas Works until 1964. It is now based on the Royal Deeside Railway at Milton of Crathes and still carries its distinctive motion guard plates.
Barry Docks: Former GWR Hawksworth 6959 Class 5MT 4-6-0 Modified Hall 7903 'Foremarke Hall' sits on the scrap lines at Barry in August 1966. It was rescued in 1981 and moved to the Swindon & Cricklade Railway where it was fully restored to working order. It left the S&CR in 2004 to become one of the main locos working on the Gloucester & Warwickshire Steam Railway, where it still operates in 2023.
Didcot Parkway: A Hitachi 800 passing DBC 66044, parked in Didcot station sidings, on 14 September 2023. Recently, a change to the timetables sees these 800s calling at Didcot for Oxford/London and vice versa rather than bypassing the station on the eastern avoiding line.
