Dumgoyne: A view looking south back over the former level crossing with the A81 at Dumgoyne station. Over the crossing the passenger platform was on the left and a goods siding with a loading bank on the right. Most West Highland Way walkers probably do not see this view as they continue their way north to Fort William with thoughts of Drymen and the Conic Hill ahead.
Ayr Harbour Junction: A view of Ayr Harbour Junction on 13th September 2023. To the right lines to Newton and to the left the line north via the up Falkland Yard to Falkland Junction.
Cameron Bridge: The new Cameron Bridge station, with footbridge installed, on 6 October 2023. A tamper applies the finishing touches to the ballast. When I arrived, the tamper was parked at the far end of the station. I thought to myself, 'wouldn't it be good if it moved a bit closer'. A couple of minutes later it did as it was told. Mind power - hasn't worked with the lottery yet though ...
Sunnyside Junction: 303058 enters the single track to Whifflet at Sunnyside Junction in June 1991.
Cameron Bridge [1st]: Looking west over the site of the 1st Cameron Bridge station on 6 October 2023. The ballast looks finished but stabilising rails await installation in the four-foot.
Kyle of Lochalsh Slip: Ferries crossing between Kyle of Lochalsh and Kyleakin, in a photograph thought to date from August 1969.
Curra Level Crossing: The surviving crossing keepers cottage at Curra Level Crossing just west of Glenbeigh is still known as Railway Cottage and has this no trespassing on the railway sign ... after all its only 63 years since closure in 1960.
Moelwyn Halt: The story of the Ffestiniog Railway's deviation line to get round the section that was flooded for a hydro-electric scheme after the line closed in 1946, is well-known and doesn't need repeating here. Parts of the 1842 deviation of the route are still visible as here, seen from UK Railtours' chartered special from Blaenau Ffestiniog to Caernarfon climbing towards Moelwyn Tunnel along the deviation, on 6th April 2019. The original 1836 alignment via inclines now forms the hidden shoreline in the foreground.
Leeds: Palindromic numbered class 91 91119 'Bounds Green Depot 1977 - 2017' at Leeds on 27th September 2023. The mural in the background is Britain's tallest and is called 'Athena Rising'. The owl is on the coat of arms of Leeds.
Dumgoyne: Killean [1st] was the terminus of the 1866 Blane Valley Railway. It was extended to Aberfoyle in 1882 by the Strathendrick and Aberfoyle Railway and the station was renamed Dumgoyne. This view looks northwards beyond the one time terminus towards Killearn. Ben Lomond is on the left. The former station site is now the Beech Tree Inn, a popular spot for walkers to pause on the West Highland Way. Some blurring added for privacy.
Patricroft: Through the Network Rail gate giving access to the trackbed of the old slow lines, 197049, which had only been in service for a few days, is crossing the Bridgwater Canal on the approach to Patricroft station. This was a TfW service from Llandudno Junction to Manchester Airport on 6th September 2023.
Cameron Bridge [1st]: 20211 and 20198 shunt CO2 tankers at Cameron Bridge. The bridge span beyond the locos carrying Station Road in the background crossed the lifted Muiredge branch.
Rye: 34067 'Tangmere' on a steam special passing Rye in 2011.
Millburn Junction: Photographed from the A9 overbridge, just a little to the east of Millburn Junction, 66425 heads towards Culloden with 4D47, the 13.40 Inverness to Mossend Intermodal on 19th August 2023.
