Kirkbuddo: View north from near Kirkbuddo showing the very straight alignment to Forfar.
Lancaster Green Ayre: The site of Lancaster Green Ayre station and shed in 2012. The station was top far left, alongside the river, in what is now public open space. From there Greyhound Bridge took the Midland line over the Lune to Morecambe Promenade. After the 1966 closure this was converted to a road to alleviate Lancaster's notorious traffic problems. To the right of Greyhound Bridge a supermarket occupies the site of Green Ayre engine shed and the single track link to the WCML at Lancaster Castle station climbed through the trees at the foot of the photo.
Winchburgh: An Edinburgh to Inverness service on 08/09/2023 near the site of Winchburgh station. The service was partially cancelled and only ran as far as Perth which may explain why it had 43035 leading with 43147 at the rear instead of the expected 43176 and 43145.
Edinburgh Gateway: 'Our railway family' is an emerging theme in ScotRail advertising (note the advert on the right).
Edinburgh Waverley: A poster celebrating the 40th anniversary of ScotRail.
Edinburgh Waverley: Here is the Borders Railway Community Partnership for the Borders Railway Tapestry Panel. The panel is due to be inaugurated next Easter at the Galashiels Transport Interchange, a short walk from the Great Tapestry of Scotland. The leaflet reads: "Come and put your stitch in the borders railway tapestry panel, and be part of the history of the railway. Here today! The panel tells the story of the Borders Railway, its historic route, its people and its visitor attractions."
Ayr Station Hotel: The fire damage to Ayr Station Hotel viewed from Burns Statue Square, where the roads are closed. The view is looking east towards the station with the Royal Scots Fusiliers memorial to the right. The mansard roof near the former station and hotel entrances has collapsed.
Ayr Station Hotel: The inevitable, but at least the dilemma about the Station Hotel is settled. Despite an earlier attempt at setting the hotel on fire it appears nothing was done to enhance security. Ayr is in chaos, traffic gridlocked, all accesses to the vicinity of the station taped off by the police.
Edinburgh Waverley: Here is Susie Finlayson with Judith Cleghorn today at Waverley inviting people to put their stitch in the Borders Railway Tapestry Panel.
St Philips Marsh Depot: 'Night Owl' 2-8-0 No 4707 has an unidentified '56XX' 0-6-2T for company at St. Philip's Marsh shed, Bristol, on 21 May 1962.
Gleensk Viaduct: A distant view of the lovely curving Gleensk Viaduct on the Farranfore to Valencia Harbour branch located between Mountain Stage and Kells taken from the Kerry Way on Drung Hill with Dingle Bay and the Dingle Peninsula beyond. The light colour at the western end of the viaduct suggests that the conversion of the trackbed into the South Kerry Greenway is already underway at that point. The line sadly closed on 1 Feb 1960.
Monton Green: As with several other stations on the Tyldesley Loop, Monton Green was elevated on an embankment and, like those others, after the 1969 closure not only was the station demolished but the embankment and bridges were cleared away leaving no trace of the railway. Immediately north of Monton Green a trackbed footpath and cycleway runs north west through Worsley to Roe Green Junction from where the old lines can be followed to either Ellenbrook or Little Hulton. This is the view from the embankment looking south east at Monton Green towards the site of the two platform station.
Threlkeld: A nice view, looking towards Penrith at Threlkeld; but its hard to tell where the CK&P crossed (beneath) the A66. If you don't precisely follow the marked crossing, the local motorists may well toot at you, even if they are several hundred feet away. Tourists, I don't know - come here and spend their money, would they.
Inverkeithing South Junction: D6851 'Flopsie' brings up the rear of 'The Statesman' at Inverkeithing South Junction, on its way from Stevenage to Inverness on 2 September 2023.
Kirkbuddo: This telegraph pole was one of only two I found still standing between Kirkbuddo and Forfar. Telegraph poles were on the south / east side of the line. View looks north to Kingsmuir.
Totnes: Totnes signal box now a cafe. Note the milk churns on the lorry behind . The milk factory has aslo closed and remains out of use.
Dyce: This is the replacement, for the building which burned down, at Dyce seen in June 2019. Sea Salt + Sole.
Aviemore: 70815 departs Aviemore for Inverness with the cement tanks.
