Kirkby: 508136 is seen at Kirkby with the 17.28 departure to Liverpool Central on 24th September 2022. Visually there is no difference between Class 507 and Class 508. The 508s were originally built as a 4-car units but have only been 3-car on Merseyside. Their compressors are more prone to making a loud banging noise and their lights can flash on and off when the contact shoes go over points and cause sparks at track level.
Cameron Bridge [1st]: Looking west from Station Road bridge over the site of the first Cameron Bridge station and yard on 8 October 2022. The cleared trackbed for the new railway is to the right. The double track will have to straddle the bridge pier, hence the widened formation here.
Liverpool Lime Street: Passengers wait to board TPE Hitachi unit 802208 at Liverpool Lime Street with a service to Newcastle on 10 September 2022.
Fountainhall: A ScotRail 6-car DMU at speed northbound through the site of Fountainhall station on 18 September 2022. The former level crossing is today a Network Rail access point and compound, while the boarded-up former station house continues to crumble away quietly alongside. The train is the 0947 (Sunday) ex-Tweedbank, scheduled to reach Waverley at 1042.
Oban: Cycle coach 153305 at the rear, with 156457 leading, waiting to depart from Oban with the 14.41 service to Glasgow Queen Street on Wednesday, 14th September 2022. This train will follow the surviving section of the former Callander & Oban Railway of 1880 as far as just north of Crianlarich, where it will then take the 1897 spur to join the West Highland line at Crianlarich station. The remainder of the Callander line east from Crianlarich, which had a separate station there, was closed in 1965 together with the Killin branch.
Cairnie Junction: On a beautiful summer afternoon in 1964, an NBL Type 2 approaches Cairnie Junction from the south with an Aberdeen-Elgin service via the 'Coast' route.
Lentran: 68001 'Evolution' and 68007 'Valiant' make history on 20th September 2022 as the first Class 68s to haul Pandora's Box to Georgemas Junction on the Far North Line. Hidden in the trees, in the distance on the right, are the platforms of the long closed station at Lentran.
Broughton [2nd]: Approaching the meagre remains of Broughton station heading east towards Peebles along the trackbed of the Symington, Biggar and Broughton Railway on Boxing Day 2011. The old island platform, now being used to stack logs, is all that survives of the railway here. This platform dates from 1896 when Broughton effectively became a three platform junction station following the opening of the Talla Railway. Today the site is now fully secured, with one of several warning signs attached to the gate reading 'Beware Dobermann'.
Eastfield Shed: Given the limitation of my camera at the time, I was amazed how well this photo turned out. 'Gordon Highlander' was a surprise visitor to Eastfield on 11 April 1966. The 4-4-0 was not taking part in the Easter Rambler No.5, which had just passed Eastfield behind WD 2-8-0 90386.
Hooton: A close up of some of the advertising graphics on 508111, yes that is Paul McCartney. It is believed that 508111 will be offered for preservation when it is withdrawn by owners Angel Trains. Others feel that preserving either 507001 or 507002 would be more appropriate given that the late Queen rode in them from Moorfields to Kirkby when they were first used back in 1978.
Burton Road Aqueduct [LC]: Two aqueducts tunnel under the Lancaster Canal near Burton and Holme station. This is the more southerly, over Burton Road, and the headroom is quite limited compared to its sister [[22859]].
Edinburgh Waverley: The Haymarket steam crane rescues naughty 08564 on the south side of Waverley Station, below the old mechanical signalbox, in 1975.
Kilchoan Pier: Caledonian MacBrayne ferry 'Loch Tarbert' from Tobermory, after arrival at Kilchoan on the Ardnamurchan peninsula, on the afternoon of Saturday, 10th September 2022. After three nights in Fort William, during which stay we enjoyed the delights of 'The Jacobite' to Mallaig and back, we were now on our way for four nights at Tobermory on the Isle of Mull where I had never been before and which included a full day's excursion by two buses and ferry to the Isle of Iona.
Bolton: TPE and Northern services call at Bolton on 7th September 2022. 397009 was heading for Glasgow from Manchester Airport, the destination of 331008 from Blackpool North. The clock tower at Bolton Town Hall is a very visible landmark.
