Kirkdale: 508136 departs from Kirkdale with the 17.36 for Liverpool Central. 508138 is the unit at the top end of Kirkdale depot and some of the new Class 777 units are just visible too. Introduction of the 777s is presently delayed. Meanwhile the availability of Class 507/8 which are all over 42 years old now is somewhat less than desired especially at peak times when there is demand for 6-car trains.

Cheddleton: USATC 2-8-0 no. 5197 looks rather gruff as it hauls the evening dining train on the Churnet Valley Railway. We had no complaints - we were expecting a diesel, but the exhaust sound was better this way.

North Queensferry [1st]: A motorcycle combination, and a well loaded Mini, follow a Humber Super Snipe onto the 'Mary Queen of Scots' at North Queensferry on 4th September 1964. The vessel has been dressed overall as it is about to be superseded by the Forth Road Bridge looming through the mist in the background, this being the last day of operation of the ferries.

Consall: This passenger shelter on the Southbound platform is cantilevered over the adjacent canal. This may explain the absence of windows on the side and rear walls. Peace of mind, you know.

Dovehouses Bridge 161 [LC]: It is at least eighty years since a canal boat turned round in the winding hole at Dovehouses. The canal north of Tewitfield closed in 1942 and several points were culverted in the 1960s for the M6 Motorway build. Just beyond here the waterway turns west through Crooklands before striking northwards again towards Kendal.
