Glasgow Central: Black 5 44796 brings empty stock, for the 5.25pm service to London, into Platform 2 at Glasgow Central, on Tuesday 25th April 1967. Polmadie-based steam locomotive operation was to cease at the end of that week. Brush Type 4 D1838 is in Platform 1 after arrival with an express from the south.

Woodacre Crossing: National Mourning Specials West Coast Railway's 86401, still in Caledonian Sleeper blue livery, passing Woodacre with the 1Z86 special from Lancaster to Euston on 19th September 2022. This was the third day when this rake of coaches was hauled by a Class 86 electric, to supplement Avanti trains for those wishing to attend events in London following the death of Her Majesty. These duties were shared with 86259 'Les Ross'. LSL's 90002 operated a similar service from Manchester Piccadilly.

Eastleigh: Freightliner 66418, in their fairly short lived yellow and green livery, running from Southampton Up Yard to the Whatley Quarries passing Eastleigh on 24th August 2022, Rep. No 6V62. This loco originally ran with Direct Rail Services.

Cullen Burn Viaduct: The Great North of Scotland Railway operated the Moray Coast Line between Elgin and Portsoy and onwards to Aberdeen. The line closed in 1968 but the trackbed between Cullen and Portknockie is now a public footpath/cycleway. The line curved round to the left in the picture, crossing three viaducts and a single arch bridge. The last viaduct is blocked off and a house has been built on the trackbed just beyond it.

Ashton Swing Bridge (Preston): L&YR 0-4-0ST No.19 was sold into industry in 1931 as LMS 11243 and never carried a BR number. It was a static exhibit at the Ribble Steam Railway for many years [[23456]], and in fact has never steamed since being preserved out of industrial service in 1967. However, the L&YR Trust funded a restoration at the East Lancashire Railway that led to a return to steam in 2022. The little 'Pug' has been back at the RSR operating trains in September 2022 and will run on both days of their October Steam Gala. It has featured in some period cameo photo shoots at the ELR (See image [[81467]]) but these are not as easy on the Preston Dock branch. However, it still made a fine sight, and sound, crossing the Swing Bridge working RSR services.

Tewitfield Locks: The eight locks at Tewitfield were numbered in reverse in that Lock 1 is the most northerly at the top of the flight. They were last used in 1942 and now act as weirs to drop the water supply from Killington Lake down to the navigable section of the Lancaster Canal that starts at Tewitfield. Perhaps the most amazing thing about the Lancaster Canal is that the route surveyed meant that these were the only locks between Preston and Kendal. This is Lock 7 looking up towards Lock 6. This would be a peaceful spot were it not for the M6 Motorway alongside but the flight is still an interesting location to visit.

Porthmadog Harbour [FR]: 'Fairlie' locomotive 'Earl Meirionnydd', dating from 1979, waiting to depart from Porthmadog Harbour station with a Ffestiniog Railway train to Blaenau Ffestiniog on 22nd May 2016. The first double-bogied articulated steam locomotives, known as 'Fairlies' after their designer, Robert Francis Fairlie (1831-1885) were introduced to the Ffestiniog Railway in 1869. Constructed with swivelling power bogies, they enable longer trains to be hauled without increasing manpower costs and have long boilers with tall chimneys at both ends, giving them a very striking appearance. The FR is still building 'Fairlies' today and some can now be seen working as far afield as Australia and USA. This photo was taken while I was waiting to have my first ever ride on the Welsh Highland Railway to Caernarfon; I travelled on the FR to Blaenau Ffestiniog the following day.

Woodacre Crossing: 92043 takes four empty Caledonian Sleeper MkV coaches from Wembley to Polmadie, seen passing Woodacre on Sunday 18th September 2022. The different profile of the coaches from the slab-sided locomotive is very noticeable in this head on view. 92033 took a reciprocal ECS working south the same day [[82530]].
