Elderslie: 20 March 1962, and Ivatt 2-6-0 No 43134, newly transferred to Greenock, is shunting the yard at Elderslie. In the background the Rootes Group factory at Linwood is taking shape, and will soon be producing the Hillman Imp car.
Nantes: The real thing - at the head of a seventeen-coach express from Paris, an SNCF 241P 4-8-2 rolls into Nantes in the summer of 1969. A relief had arrived earlier behind a diesel, giving rise to more than a little concern on my part, as I had been hoping to see one of the 4-8-2s on express duty during their final summer of service. But all was well when 241P11 arrived spot on time with the main train.
Accrington Tram Depot: The last tram ran in Accrington in 1932 but the tram shed at Ellison Street became the corporation bus depot and continued in such use into modern times. I remember often looking down the street to see the distinctive red and dark blue Accrington buses inside. Towards the end of its life as the bus garage it was rebuilt with a part cladding exterior and now serves as a Jewsons branch as seen here looking along Ellison St, near the railway station, in May 2022.
Chester-le-Street: There is a reason for the absence of trains and the blurred figure in orange: a young man had decided to walk off the end of the Chester-le-Street Up platform (shown) and head towards London. You often hear about such incidents, but rarely witness them. A combination of rail staff and police persuaded the man to return to a safe place; and to the railway's credit, train movements were back to normal in 40 minutes - just as it was going dark!
Aviemore Shed: In 1975, with access to Aviemore engine shed re-established, Ivatt 2MT 46464 was moved by Black 5, 45025 from Boat of Garten to allow completion of an overhaul and entry into service. The short convoy is seen arriving alongside Aviemore shed.
Barrhead: SPT 156509 about to enter the bay platform at the north end of Barrhead station on 17 August 2006 with a terminating service from Glasgow Central.
Ramsbottom: 50015 'Valiant' arrives at Ramsbottom with the 15.00 Rawtenstall to Heywood on 2nd July 2022. The gates here are operated by hand by the signal box gate wheel, a possibly unique surviving feature.
Prince Regent: Class 345 unit on an Elizabeth Line service to Abbey Wood, just departed from Custom House on the alignment of the former North Woolwich branch that closed in 2006 and descending into the reopened Connaught Tunnel, seen from the DLR's Prince Regent station in the blistering heat of Saturday, 16th July 2022. Elizabeth Line trains do not stop here, interchange with the DLR being available at nearby Custom House.
Lugton: Railbus SC79958 enters Lugton on 3 November 1962 , prior to heading to Beith. This would be one of its last runs, as the branch closed the following day. The line to Giffen remained open for goods traffic for some time after that.
Fraserburgh: The derelict remains of Fraserburgh passenger station, as seen during the visit by the Angus Railway Group's 'Buchan Belle' railtour on 1 June 1974. The goods yard was still active at this time.
Carlisle: A TPE Class 397 pulls away from the Carlisle stop on 2nd July 2022 and heads north for Edinburgh.
Nuneaton: Its always worth checking out trains lurking away from the usual boarding areas. For example, you might see 730010 on platform 5 at Nuneaton, apparently on an out and back training run from Crewe.
