Chingford: Exterior of Chingford station on 7th September 2013. This is the terminus of the purely suburban line from Liverpool Street, which was taken over by London Overground on 31st May 2015. It opened by the GER on 2nd September 1878, replacing an earlier station of 1873 half a mile to the south when the line was extended and it was originally intended to continue further beyond here to a terminus at High Beech, an upland plateau and recreation area in Epping Forest but only a few yards were built and until the line was electrified in 1960, this served as an engine dock. It was swept away in 1968 to make way for a new bus station that replaced the one half a mile further on at the Royal Forest Hotel. At the same time, the platforms that had been linked by a subway were linked by a new walkway across the site of the engine dock and the subway was closed. In 1882, Queen Victoria arrived at this station to formally declare Epping Forest open to the public for all time.

Didcot Parkway: Post Office red liveried Gatwick Express 387205, just arrived at Didcot from Paddington, adds a splash of colour on 23rd September 2021. No doubt it was helping the GWR fleet out.

Gillett's Crossing: 158869, next stop Squires Gate with a Blackpool South service, passes the site of Gillett's Crossing Halt on 11th January 2022. The ground level timber platform opened in 1913 for a new railmotor service between Lytham and Blackpool. At that time there was just a minor foot crossing of the line, later superseded by the road bridge from which this photo was taken. Burlington Road Halt (now the site of Blackpool Pleasure Beach station) opened at the same time as Gillett's Crossing but both closed in September 1939.

Adlington [Cheshire]: This smart brick building on the down platform at Adlington appears to be a recently built house, on the site of the original station building. What looks like a residential extension to the left, for people who strongly dislike views of trains, is a double garage with attic.

Sanquhar: The summer Saturday 6.40am Birmingham – Glasgow, heading north near Sanquhar behind Jubilee 4-6-0 45697 'Achilles', in the course of a rather frustrating journey. Delays around Carlisle had cost 15 minutes, but the Jubilee was running extremely well and would certainly have made up time. Almost every time we got going at express speed, however, we ran into adverse signals for slower trains in front - altogether twelve signal checks, six of which were to a dead stand.
