Bassenthwaite Lake: The forecourt of the Orient Express cafe at Bassenthwaite Lake station. Station House on the left has been lived in since the line closure in 1966 but until around 2018 the station building on the right just comprised some crumbling walls with no roof and so it has needed a full restoration. The westbound platform has also been reinstated. Just off picture to the right is an LMR Maroon 'BASSENTHWAITE LAKE STATION' entrance sign, another nice touch. Such is the popularity of this new venue that the road outside was full of patrons' cars, even on a mid-week December day.

Slateford: A Network Rail track machine returning to Slateford Depot from Mossend runs east through Slateford station on 10 August 2017. The unit is running wrong line having crossed over at the west end of the platform in order to reach the single lead Slateford Junction up ahead. The line into the depot is some 250m beyond the junction.

Whitehall Road Junction: An example of what lies beneath: if I remember rightly this was found during the investigation of the old tracks south of Whitehall Junction, Leeds parallel to the lines towards Doncaster. Rather atypically the railway here is underlain by a thick layer of natural orange sand which is good for water drainage; more typically elsewhere the formation contains amounts of clay (glacial, alluvial or marine) which does not readily allow drainage. The remnants of ballast above the sand is clearly worn out: it was probably regular stone ballast but has degraded to such an extent that only a small percentage is still recognisable as such. It also looks to have been 'cemented' to some extent; this is possibly due to the previous use of limestone ballast which breaks down both physically and chemically.

Lugton: Bristol railbus SC79958 at Lugton, after arrival on a service from Beith Town. The mildly stylish coachwork design by Eastern Coach Works Ltd was comprehensively outshone, if one may be permitted to say so, by the classic elegance of the lady making her way along the platform. The photograph was taken in the summer of 1962, a few months before passenger services between Lugton and Beith were withdrawn. The two railbuses in this class were introduced in 1958 for the Scottish Region but withdrawn in 1966.

Ashley: 66089 runs through Ashley in Cheshire on 23rd December 2021, working waste transfer wagons from Knowsley near Kirkby to Wilton on Teesside. These trains come off the Kirkby branch at Wigan Wallgate but rather than go direct through Manchester Victoria they head down the WCML to Hartford before joining this line to Altrincham. They then run through Stockport, Denton, Ashton Moss and Miles Platting before eventually gaining the Calder Valley route towards Yorkshire, an extra forty miles on the journey but avoiding Platting bank. Empties to Knowsley take the direct route.

Aviemore Shed: Blow-down time for 5025 at Aviemore shed in 1982. After allowing pressure to drop overnight, mudhole doors would be removed to allow hot water from the boiler to escape, sludge would be discharged and the boiler would then dry out.
