Wells Harbour [WHR]: Opened in July 1976, the mile long narrow gauge Wells Harbour Railway set up by Roy Francis remained a popular visitor attraction each holiday season for 45 years. It provided a genuine passenger service in that it helped transport young children and the elderly over most of the long distance from the town to the beach. In September 2021, and to widespread dismay, it was closed down and then lifted two months later. This photo shows the Wells town terminus in July 1987 with steam loco Edmund Hannay arriving. The fares at that time were 30p adult, 20p child.

Black Beck Level Crossing: Looking north west from Town Pasture Lane on the eastern edge of Barnard Castle in October 2020, showing an extant curving section of the former Darlington to Barnard Castle line between Black Beck level crossing, to right of view, and the A688 Bishop Auckland Road seen in the distance. A culvert for the Black Beck can be seen to left of the trees at extreme right of view.

Bassenthwaite Lake: Although the station house at Bassenthwaite Lake survived the 1966 closure the station itself fell into dereliction. Very recently the site has been transformed into the Orient Express cafe and special events venue using the rebuilt station, the westbound platform and this star attraction. Full credit to the owners for rapidly steering this project to a very successful conclusion in difficult times.

Arrochar and Tarbet: Abandoned road. For much of the length of Loch Lomond two parallel roads ran up the west side, a high and a low road. The opening of the West Highland Railway was the end for the high level road north of Arrochar. Its route is occupied by the railway which crosses over it repeatedly. This is a view north along the old road, now covered by a thick moss mat. The dry stane dykes remain on either side. The West Highland is out of shot on the left and the still open low road is off to the right.

Cattal: Former Scotrail 3 Coach Turbostar 170460 readies to depart Cattal with the 16.12 ex York to Leeds via Harrogate service. Of note is the substantial semaphore signal structure, with both Home and Distant signals, that protects the adjacent level crossing. The line is clear for the unit to head towards Knaresborough, with a colour signal in the far distance near Whixley gated crossing showing a green aspect. The miniscule signal box still sits at the platform end.
