St Leonards Tunnel: Sheltered spot. The south portal of St Leonards Tunnel provides some useful cover as a shower of rain sweeps across Holyrood Park on 2 January 2008. The signpost indicates the footpath to Duddingston Low Road, while straight ahead the 1831 Edinburgh & Dalkeith route continues south east towards the level crossing on Duddingston Road West (see [[60421]]).

Restonhill Ballast Pit: A likely location for the source of the gravel heaps mapped beside Houndwood Siding see [[75407]] The location is near Restonhill Farm about 3 miles South East of Houndwood and less than a mile from Reston Station. How was the gravel loaded and unloaded? The shape of the heaps suggests it was dropped vertically rather than end- or side-tipped. There is no siding at the gravel pit and the running line is on embankment so it is unlikely to have been hand-shovelled into barrows then into ballast wagons which suggests the use of a wagon-mounted or portable crane or gin. Both maps are from the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey 1:2500 scale surveyed in 1856 see https://maps.nls.uk/view/74943985 for this map and https://maps.nls.uk/view/74944000 for Houndwood Siding. Stirling: Stirling station was a terminal for Motorail services to a variety of destinations over the years to 1989, including Kensington Olympia, Cambridge, Bristol, Brockenhurst, Dover and Newton Abbot. By 1985, only a London Euston service remained. This is pictured at Stirling on 25th September that year awaiting departure at 11.30, double-headed by 25199 and 27207. The high end cars loaded at the other end of the train suggested a certain wealthy clientele and I imagine the gentleman making himself known to the driver is politely asking for restraint on the curves of the WCML lest his beloved Bentley fly off its open wagon.
