Bathgate East LMD: A ScotRail service for Newcraighall runs through a sea of fresh ballast shortly after leaving Bathgate terminus in July 2008. The Bathgate route was still single at this time with the former goods line in the centre having been renewed and made ready to take over westbound traffic on the reopening of the Airdrie - Bathgate route. The gentleman on the left is approaching along a new line which will serve the light maintenance depot, to be constructed on the former STVA site visible in the background. The pitched roofs beyond that are part of the now demolished Balbardie Steel Works.
