Royal Oak South Junction: Approaching Royal Oak South Junction and signal box on a summer Saturday in 1977. Photograph taken from a train coming off the branch from Filey Holiday Camp and heading for Hull. Part of the town of Hunmanby stands in the background.

Filey Holiday Camp: Extract from a map published in 1954 showing the lines linking the Scarborough - Hull route with Filey Holiday Camp station. The branch ran from Royal Oak North and South Junctions on the main line to the 4-platform terminus half a mile away. The station was located on the west side of the busy A165 with the large Butlins Camp on the opposite side. The task of ferrying arrivals and departures between the busy station and the camp itself (which could accommodate up to 11,000 people) was undertaken by Butlins Road Trains running via a private tunnel under the road. Stanhope: Leaving Stanhope heading west there is a local back road that heads to Broomlee and Dandry Shield, which crosses the railway at Crag Nook. Beyond the road bridge a further steel bridge crosses the River Wear, which twists and turns as it meanders east from its tributary. This view looks back east from the road bridge towards Stanhope, showing how sections of the track have become overgrown whilst mothballed. I am not aware if the river bridges are deemed fit enough to be crossed by rolling stock, as they are fenced off to prevent unauthorised access.

Glasgow Queen Street Low Level: Work in progress. Access from the High Level station to the westbound Low Level platform is still by these ageing steps, but something a little fancier is clearly afoot. We now have daylight for a start. A recorded voice (who sounded like actor Gordon Kennedy) used to constantly remind us here to 'always hold the handrail and take care on the stairs'.

Hampstead Heath: Hampstead Heath, looking east on 29th August 2020. This original Hampstead Junction Railway station opened with the line on 2nd January 1860. In 1953 it was rebuilt by the London Midland Region in rather doleful reinforced concrete and in 1963, when part of the Broad Street to Richmond line, was listed for closure in the Beeching Report. Protests came thick and fast and it was reprieved in 1966. Thirty years later, the line was converted from third rail to OLE and the 1953 buildings were replaced by these waiting areas with traditional style canopies, the only station on the line to have been so treated. Then in November 2007, after the depressing Silverlink era, the entire line was handed over to Transport for London and rechristened London Overground.

Brunthill Siding: This shed is at Brunthill Siding, still in position and used by Carlisle Warehousing. Viewed from the south, it is on the rump of the Waverley route from Stainton Junction, where trains from Kingmoor Yard have to reverse and then go north over the WCML to reach the depot.

Minehead: 9351 in store at Minehead station in September 2020. This engine is a rebuild from a GWR Large Prairie 2-6-2T No 5193, a former Barry wreck that has been converted into a 2-6-0 tender engine. The level crossing on the outskirts of Minehead is to be upgraded after Christmas and so the WSR will only be open from Bishops Lydeard to Williton for a period of time.

Milton Junction [Glasgow]: At Milton Junction, on 19th April 1965, Caley 4-2-2 123 moves ahead towards St Rollox after uncoupling from the Easter Monday Scottish Rambler railtour, which can be seen waiting in the background behind 'Gordon Highlander'. The locos had brought the train in tandem from Carstairs, but it would seem that double-headed arrivals were not welcome at Buchanan St, so the Caley Single was scheduled to leave the train at Milton Junction, with the GNSR 4-4-0 taking the train forward into Glasgow single-handed.

Milton Junction [Glasgow]: GNSR 4-4-0 No.49 'Gordon Highlander' restarts after a pause at Milton Junction, on its way towards Glasgow Buchanan with the 'Scottish Rambler' railtour on Easter Monday 1965. The tour was scheduled to detach Caley 4-2-2 123 there, hence the pause to complete this manoeuvre.
