Notwithstanding the opening of the Blyth and Tyne line as far as Ashington, the campaigning work of the South East Northumberland Rail Users Group (SENRUG) continues. One aspect of their activities is to campaign for the reopening of the closed Ashington Coal Company line north of Ashington to link with the mothballed Butterwell line, which joins the East Coast Main Line at Butterwell Junction. Although overgrown, redundant rails are visible evidence of the closed line which served Linton and Ellington to the east of Ashington Colliery and reveal the previous use of the area now used for public recreation.
