Grimsargh

CMHW No. 1, a Barclay 0-4-0ST, sits at Grimsargh prior to working a service on the hospital railway to Whittingham. The fences in the background mark the line of the Longridge railway. This loco was new to the railway in 1888 (Andrew Barclay works No. 304) and until 1904 was the sole motive power on the two mile line. It was finally withdrawn in 1946. The sound basic design of the Barclay 0-4-0ST was steadily developed over the years and it is interesting to compare this early example with one built sixty five years later. See image 32103.
