This display marked the start of the events celebrating the A3's centenary and also the 170th anniversary of the opening of Kings Cross as the London terminus of the Great Northern Railway, designed by Lewis Cubitt. I asked an official why the centenary is being celebrated now when this world-famous locomotive did not enter service until February 1923.
