Colchester: The date is 7/7/77 and commuters line up at Colchester for the arrival of the 08.11 Clacton/Walton to Liverpool Street service. Their journey will have been relatively stress free, because none of them has portable music, mobile phones, laptops, tablets, games and incoming messages requiring attention. There will, however, have been a fair amount of newspaper rustling, card playing, unwanted conversations with bored strangers and, of course, smoking.

Ladybank: 40060 takes the Perth route at Ladybank (North) Junction on 7th July 1978. The layout here was altered during October 1980 when the signalbox was abolished and colour light signalling installed. When the junction was remodelled in 1980 one of the principal aims was to raise the speed limits for traffic entering and exiting the Perth route. The original crossover was on canted track which caused a severe restriction to southbound traffic. I cannot recall the previous speed limit but Up trains are now permitted to travel at 50mph. Previously Perth bound trains were all routed via the Down Branch loop and again speed was severely limited. Today Perth bound traffic is permitted through Ladybank at 70mph.

Alresford (Essex): In 2016, members of the local community in Alresford, Essex were engaged in a campaign to save their historic station building from demolition by Abellio Greater Anglia. Part of that campaign involved making the premises look as attractive as possible to show the potential for renovation and community reuse. The building is shown here on 7th July 2016, along with a dedicated local resident tending flower beds added by volunteers.

Oxenholme Lake District: TPE 185150 loads another set of passengers for Windermere in the back platform at Oxenholme on 7th July 2016. At this time masts were being erected for the electrification of the branch. This was later abandoned with a proposal to use hybrid Class 769 units (Class 319 EMUs with underfloor diesel engines) instead. However, in 2020, there is talk again of wiring the branch - time will tell.

Hebden Bridge: With the S&C closed north of Appleby until at least March 2017, WCRC have substituted a weekly Carnforth to Scarborough run alternating to run via Skipton one week and Preston the next. On 7 July 2016 it was a 'via Preston' week and the return trip is seen arriving at Hebden Bridge. 37516 and 37668 did the honours between Carnforth and York with 8F 48151 doing the York - Scarborough leg. Having popped over from Preston by train I had the choice on the return of paying a part fare on the charter or waiting for the Northern Class 158 around 20 minutes later. Stockholms Södra: During summer 2018 this station was the temporary terminus for long distance trains from southern Sweden, Denmark and Germany. The overground platforms at Stockholm Central were closed meantime to allow bridge repair and strengthening work to be carried out on the two track section 'wasp's waist' across the waterways separating it from Riddarholmen and Södermalm. In the background is an SJ X2000 from Gothenburg while to the right is an SL commuter train. The station is easily able to handle even the longest train with 4 platforms each several hundred metres long. Originally the station was the northern terminus of the Southern Mainline opened in 1860; however it has been rebuilt in the 20th Century and connected to the northern Swedish network.

South Gyle: A Waverley-bound service accelerates through South Gyle after a stop at Edinburgh Gateway. There are several pairs of stations in Scotland which are closer together, but here, with few exceptions, trains call at one or the other but not both. 2016HS2 may be diverted around Sheffield, says report [Rail News]NEW proposals to solve the dispute about the site of the future HS2 station in Sheffield involve diverting the line east of the city and serving the centre by a spur to the Midland Main Line instead. The plans, unveiled today in a report by HS2 chairman David Higgins, have rejected previous plans to create a new station at Meadowhall on the grounds of expense, and the alternative of reviving the former station at Sheffield Victoria has also been ruled out because it would be intrusive and also costly. The new option proposes that HS2 services between London and Sheffield would use a spur off the high speed line and travel directly to the existing Sheffield station.
