Carlisle Kingmoor Shed: The Coronations looked splendid in any colour, and here is No 46236 'City of Bradford' at Carlisle Kingmoor depot in maroon on 28 April 1963. Class 40 No D223 'Lancastria' completes the picture, and was the motive power for my return journey to Glasgow.

Carlisle Kingmoor MPD: What happens when you get involved with a school trip! Resting quietly in a remote spot at Carlisle Kingmoor shed on 28 April 1963 are the two original Princess Royals, 46200 and 46201, with two of Kingmoor's Crabs for company. 46201 'Princess Elizabeth', then in green livery, is still in active main line preservation, but maroon 46200 'Princess Royal' was less successful.

Edinburgh Princes Street: Mystery picture...thanks to all who responded to the request to help identify the old photograph - in particular to Bill Roberton who finally nailed it. The picture was in fact taken looking north across the lines outside Princes Street station, Edinburgh in 1963. Amongst the features still standing are the tenements in the right background which form the rear of Rutland Square and the tower on the skyline, which is part of St Georges West church on Shandwick Place. I have emailed details to Alex Dyne who is paying a visit to Edinburgh next week and who had requested help in identifying the location - an old family photograph of his late father who not only appears in the picture but was also the engineer who designed the bridge on behalf of the SSEB - Ed. Polmadie Shed: Close up of the motion of Fairburn 2-6-4T 42274, taken at Polmadie on the morning of Friday 28th April 1967. The locomotive was rostered for an outing to Gourock that afternoon, for return on the 5.03 pm service to Glasgow Central. This proved to be the final occasion on which a regular timetabled passenger train within BR's Scottish Region was covered by a Scottish Region steam locomotive.

Greenock West: View from the 5.03pm Gourock to Glasgow Central leaving Greenock West, hauled by Fairburn 2-6-4T 42274, on Friday 28th April 1967. This was the final steam hauled service on the line, and indeed I think it was the final occasion, in BR days, on which a Scottish-based steam locomotive worked a scheduled 'Scottish' passenger service. Quite a number of Anglo-Scottish services were hauled by locomotives from south of the border on later dates in 1967, but I believe that this was the last service 'internal' to Scotland.

Polmadie Shed: Fairburn 2-6-4T 42274 at Polmadie on Friday 28th April 1967. Later that day, the locomotive would take the 5.03pm from Gourock to Glasgow Central, the final steam hauled service on the line. I have subsequently realised that the event had rather wider significance, at least for those of a certain mindset! As far as I know, it was the final occasion, in BR days at any rate, on which a steam locomotive from a Scottish shed worked a scheduled 'Scottish' passenger service. A number of Anglo-Scottish services were hauled by locomotives from south of the border later in 1967, but I believe that this was the last steam-hauled service that started and finished in Scotland.

Polmadie Shed: Fairburn 2-6-4T 42274 at Polmadie on Friday 28th April 1967. Later that day, the locomotive would take the 5.03pm from Gourock to Glasgow Central, the final steam hauled service on the line. As far as I know, it was in fact the final occasion, in BR days at leat, on which a Scottish-based steam locomotive worked a scheduled passenger service wholly within Scotland. It was commendable of Polmadie to get hold of the last remaining Scottish Fairburn for the purpose, but perhaps surprising that no attempt was made to clean the locomotive.

The photograph was taken on Friday 28th April 1967, and this was the final steam hauled service on the line. In recent years I have come to realise that the train had wider significance, as I believe that it was the final occasion, in BR days, on which a steam locomotive from a Scottish shed worked a scheduled 'Scottish' passenger service. Quite a number of Anglo-Scottish services were steam hauled, albeit by English-based locomotives, on later dates in 1967, but I think that this was the last purely Scottish one.

Paisley Gilmour Street: There was remarkably little 'enthusiast' presence for the final scheduled steam run from Gourock to Glasgow on 28th April 1967, but two passengers were out for a brief chat with the crew of Fairburn 2-6-4T 42274 during the stop at Paisley Gilmour St.

Glasgow Central: The 17.03 from Gourock, on 28th April 1967, was the final scheduled steam run on the Gourock – Glasgow route, and Polmadie turned out Fairburn 2-6-4T 42274 to do the honours. The train is seen after arrival at Glasgow Central.

Eglinton Street Goods: A 1967 'grab shot' of Standard 4 2-6-4T 80004 at Eglinton Street Goods depot, taken from a passing Gourock-Glasgow train. The scene looks somewhat unremarkable, but this was the Friday of the final week of active Scottish-based steam, and the passing train was the final steam-hauled service from Gourock, so there was a bit of history being recorded.

Cardross: The signalbox at Cardross was set alight very late in the day of 26 April 1971 by a drunk passenger who had just arrived on a Helensburgh bound train. The remains of the box are seen early in the morning of 28 April 1971. The signalman at the time of the incident was a friend, Jack Vickers. A temporary control centre was set up in an old waiting room on the up platform and an interlocked single lever ground frame was installed in front of the former box to release the level crossing gates. The arrangement lasted until the North Clyde resignalling was completed following which the area was controlled from Yoker.

Cardross: The remains of Cardross SB around 36 hours after the fire that had occurred late in the day on 26 April 1971. At this end of the block shelf was the train describer equipment for trains to and from Dumbarton Central SB, installed when that box was constructed at the time of the North Clyde electrification see image [[22082]]. As Cardross SB was adjacent to the 'modern' Dumbarton SB, the train reporting codes had to be entered manually for eastbound services and these would automatically be passed to Dumbarton as the train entered their area. At the far end of the shelf was the panel that housed the 'tapper' & bell instrument for the block to Ardmore East and the rotary switches that controlled the colour light signals.

Rosyth: As well as being at an odd angle Rosyth's ticket office was unusual in that it was on 'stilts' so as to be at street level - yet it wasn't on the street. Tan Hill: Replica/rebuilt narrow gauge wagon outside the Tan Hill Inn on the Pennine Way near the Cumbria/Durham/North Yorkshire boundaries. Presumably similar vehicles were used in the nearby stone quarries at this bleak spot (but if anyone has any more definite information please share). The nearest station to Tan Hill would have been Barras on the Stainmore line see image [[21928]] but the road continues to climb the moors for a further five miles from Barras before reaching this windswept location. With thanks to Messrs Martin, Armit and Taylor. Editors note: Some may recall the Tan Hill Inn making the headlines on 31 December 2009 when revellers celebrating the New Year found the surrounding roads blocked by snow and were unable to leave the pub for 3 days ... somebody pinch me!

Kirkby Stephen East: On the Stainmore side of the old road bridge at Kirkby Stephen East the trackbed has been turned into a caravan park and all trace of the railway removed except for this goods shed now used by the site operator. After closure of the Stainmore route in 1962 trains from Appleby continued to serve a coal depot here until 1972. The station itself lies immediately beyond the old bridge, now turned into the embankment seen in this view. See image [[9449]].

Merrygill Viaduct: Merrygill viaduct lies one mile east of Kirkby Stephen East on the climb to Stainmore. Trains continued to serve the quarry here until 1975, using the Warcop line from Appleby, and a one mile section of the trackbed, including two viaducts. This section survives as a public walkway.

Glasgow Central: The Edinburgh portion of the Lowland Caledonian Sleeper arriving almost unnoticed at platform 2, Glasgow Central, on the inaugural night of the new Mk.5 sleeper stock while attention is focussed on the recently arrived Glasgow portion of shiny new coaches on platform 10. There were planned diversions of the Sleepers via the East Coast Main Line that evening, but unfortunately it was the unplanned signalling failures at Cobbinshaw near Carstairs that made the national news with the resulting long delays to both south and northbound sleepers on their launch night.

Nawton: A short distance west of Nawton Station, and its goods yard and sidings, the line crossed Gale Lane on an overbridge, which has long been demolished with the trackbed on the west side being used to create the vehicle entrance for the Ryedale Secondary School. However a small section of the east side abutment still appears to exist, acting as retaining wall to a bungalow built across the trackbed at the higher level to the road, and linking into the wall forming its entrance. This would be bridge HMY12.

Haymarket: Haymarket station on 28 April 2021 was still quiet in terms of people, and trains were less frequent because of the emergency timetable. From Saturday, the traveller from Rome to Naples can cover the 225km (140 miles) in little over an hour, paying as little as €20 (£16.33) for the pleasure. The new Italo – the first privately operated high-speed train in Europe – is a train like no other, claims Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, chairman of Ferrari and boss of NTV, the firm challenging the state service.
