Croston: In order to cope with increased volumes of traffic on 4 April 2009, Grand National day, the Northern trains Preston to Ormskirk shuttle operated using a 153+150 combination. The photograph shows 153331 on the Preston end of the 1710 hrs Preston to Ormskirk service with 150224 leading as the service passes Ulnes Walton between Midge Hall and Croston. The area on the other side of the tracks was a WW2 ammuntion storage site with protected storage bunkers (some still exist) which were interconnected by railway sidings linking onto the Preston - Ormskirk line. Some of the site is now occupied by HMP Garth and HMP Wymott.

Bathgate Yard: The former coal yard at Bathgate is now a compound for contractors working on the reopening of the line to Airdrie. There are a couple of catenary masts erected alongside a panel of track, presumably for testing or training. An Edinburgh-bound 158 passes by on 4 April.

Dewsbury: In addition to the platform tracks, one of the two through roads at Dewsbury was reinstated to cope with increased traffic. It allows fast trains heading for Leeds to overtake slower services and is well used. Old North Road: Having found what may be the world's shortest standard gauge railway see image [[30642]] we now have what could be the record for double track (look at the far end of the platforms, before the new factory building). This station on the Bedford - Cambridge line (whose name comes from its location adjacent to the former A1 road) is very well preserved - there is the main station building, a signal cabin, and a goods shed beyond - but, sadly, it will never see trains again.

Svensta: A Class 92 DMU of the Norwegian State Railways NSB comes into view on its way east. It was known as Nabotåget, the neighbour train and it ran from a suburb of Trondheim to Östersund Central. As the line had been closed at Stora Helvetet (a very steep-sided embankment which was showing signs of instabilty) from November 2013 to early 2015 the service was suspended and with tendering of rail services it looks unlikely to be restored when that part of the line is replaced by a bridge in 2018. It is only due to run from Storlien just on the Swedish side of the border to and from Trondheim.

Galgate: The recently upgraded cutting at Hampson Lane near Galgate has the appearance of a brand new railway. Freightliner 70011 is on a Coatbridge to Daventry service on 4th April 2016. 2014Lorry lobby derails the case for a safer A9 [Scotsman]Scotland’s killer road has just got more deadly – while the safest form of transport wasn’t even given a look-in, argues David Spaven. The crude politics of the Perth-Inverness transport corridor will just not go away. Despite the safety gloss being presented to the public, new evidence obtained from the Scottish Government by the Rail Freight Group (RFG) shows that the planned increase in lorry speed limits from 40mph to 50mph on single-carriageway sections of the A9 is being driven by “operational benefits” – and more lives will be lost as the price of government helping to keep truckers competitive. 2015Abellio to keep ScotRail’s free first class secret [Scotsman]A SECRET perk enjoyed by passengers in the know is to be retained by new ScotRail operator Abellio – travelling first-class at no extra cost. The little-known quirk is because some trains with first-class seats run on routes where first-class tickets are not available, so anyone can sit on them.It has even led to commuter trains being crammed with passengers while their first-class compartments remain empty. ScotRail only offers first-class on its inter-city routes – the main line between Edinburgh and Glasgow, and between Aberdeen and Inverness. However, some of those diesel-powered trains also operate on suburban routes, for which only standard-class tickets can be bought. They include between Edinburgh and Glasgow and both Dunblane and Fife. That means passengers lucky enough to find themselves on such trains can avail themselves of the “extra space and comfort for luxurious travel”, as ScotRail describes its first class.
