Haymarket Shed [2nd]: One of the attractive Holmes class J83 0-6-0Ts no 68481, photographed at Haymarket shed on 26 April 1959. This locomotive regularly worked as a station pilot at Waverley, during which time it became the subject of a well known photograph by the late Eric Treacy.

Haymarket Shed [2nd]: Gresley V3 2-6-2T no 67615 stands alongside 62685 Malcolm Graeme at Haymarket shed in April 1959.

Haymarket Shed [2nd]: Robinson D11 Improved Director no 62690 The Lady of the Lake stands at the west end of Haymarket shed in April 1959. The locomotive, built at the Scotswood works of Armstrong Whitworth in 1924, was a Haymarket engine throughout the BR era until its official withdrawal in July 1961.

Crewe: D432 stands at Crewe on 26 April 1969. The locomotive was 9 months old at the time and not yet fitted with jumpers to allow multiple operation. [Ref query 1670]

Crewe: An up freight passing through Crewe in April 1969 behind D429. The locomotive has not yet been fitted with jumpers for multiple working. These were required for double heading of Anglo-Scottish expresses north of Crewe the following year until completion of electrification in 1974. Hillmorton Junctions: Class 85 mixed traffic electric loco 85003 is seen approaching Hillmorton Junction, south of Rugby, along the Northampton loop line on a rake of empty flat bogie wagons in 1989. The WCML can be seen forward of the Northampton line at a lower level. The view is taken from the area of land that until a few years earlier contained Hillmorton sidings, and was fully accessible, via the track passing the former railway cottages, and was ungated and unfenced from the main line.

New Luce: Former site of New Luce station, looking north, a station which had a passing loop. The single storey main station building was on the right with the signal box beyond, behind the camera was the goods shed.

Collessie: Fife Animal Park and Bistro, Collessie. The peak is East Lomond. A turbostar heads for Ladybank.

Kirkham North Junction: 156479, on the down slow line, passes the junction for Blackpool South before rejoining the main lines to Blackpool North. The fast lines are in the foreground directly in front of the signal box. In the trees immediately behind the box are the remains of the flyover from the Blackpool Central lines - now reduced to a disused siding that can be seen in the distance.

Kirkham North Junction: A Blackpool North to Liverpool service, with 156426, takes the fast lines at Kirkham North Junction past the impressive signal box to avoid the station island platform and continue non stop to Preston.

Kirkham and Wesham: The feather on the green signal indicates that 156473 is heading for Blackpool South at Kirkham North Junction, which lies just beyond the overbridge. The unit has just called at Kirkham and Wesham and the fast Blackpool lines that bypass the platforms can be seen on the far right.

Broomhill: The end of the line in April 2008. The Strathspey Railway is being extended towards Grantown-on-Spey from Broomhill.

Kirkham and Wesham: 158756 takes the fast line through Kirkham, looping round the space formerly occupied by the station signal box, with a Blackpool to York service on 26th April 2008. In 2020, although a refurbished 158756 can still be seen on these duties, the station scene has been transformed by removal of the fast lines, electrification and the new Platform 3. See image [[67725]].

Moss Side: Moss Side station was closed in 1961 but the platforms were left in situ and when the line was singled it was reopened in 1983. View across the level crossing towards Kirkham - disused down platform on the right.

Moss Side: 156473 waits for the crossing barriers to close before leaving Moss Side for Kirkham on a Blackpool South to Colne service. Although substantially modified the house in the picture is the original station house.

Wrea Green: 150139 on a Colne to Blackpool South service passes the site of Wrea Green station. The station closed in 1961 and all trace has been swept away. Despite continuing local pressure for reopening the absence of any infrastructure will make this costly compared to neighbouring station Moss Side which reopened in 1983. Haverthwaite: The view north from Haverthwaite, past the depot and towards the northern tunnel, as 0-4-0ST David waits to depart for Lakeside. As AB 2333/1953 this is one of the youngest surviving Andrew Barclay steam locos. It was built for Millom Ironworks and so has spent all its life in the Furness area.

Haverthwaite: A strong looking lad from Kilmarnock. Andrew Barclay 0-4-0ST David, waits to haul its three coaches to Lakeside on an early season L&HR train. The southerly Haverthwaite tunnel, still used for running round, is behind the train.

Grange-over-Sands: A sizeable group of passengers waits for the first eastbound service of the day on a sunny Sunday morning at Grange-over-Sands. Unusually, due to engineering work, Transpennine 185130 is heading for Manchester Victoria rather than the Airport.

North Grimston: Two for the price of one. Approaching North Grimston level crossing from the north along Ludith Road in 2009. In the centre, to the left of the crossing is part of the original platform and rebuilt station house, while to the right is the replacement station see image [[68534]]. On the far left of the picture is a former railwayman's cottage, with the remains of the coal drops standing just beyond.The road was crossed on the level here by three lines; the platform line, a parallel siding and a short stub serving a goods dock just off picture to the right.

Burntisland: 158707 draws to a halt at Burntisland on 26 April with a stopping service to Glenrothes with Thornton.

Burntisland Junction: 170416 runs south towards Edinburgh past the disconnected former Docks branch at Burntisland Links on 26 April 2010. The vacant area on the far right of the picture is the site of the former works/locomotive shed.

Langho: The green Duchess 46233, on the last leg of the journey from Barnhill to Preston, climbs out of the Ribble Valley in pouring rain at Langho with the Great Britain V tour on 28 April (Day 6). The train had travelled via the GSW and S&C routes.

Bamber Bridge: Nearing the end of the journey on Day 6 of the Railway Touring Company's 'Great Britain V' railtour, with the weather having taken a turn for the worse. Ex-LMS Coronation Class pacific 46233 'Duchess of Sutherland' brings the 13 coach load effortlessly through Bamber Bridge at speed heading for the overnight stop at Preston.

Lochgelly: View south from the former level crossing over Auchterderran Road, Lochgelly, in April 2012. The footpath follows the trackbed of the Lochgelly Iron & Coal Co/NCB mineral railway which ran to the Jenny Gray Colliery (closed 1959). Connection was made to the Fife Circle east of Lochgelly Station by means of a rope-worked incline.

Newton-on-Ayr: Just before the Duchess was due at Newton-on-Ayr with the 'Great Britain V' on 26 April this Killoch - Drax coal train emerged behind 66585, snaking across from the Mauchline line and stopping to collect a crewman. It then crawled through the station blocking all views of the down line and potentially of the Duchess - causing some anxiety among the waiting paparazzi. Fortunately it had gone by the time the Pacific appeared.

Glasgow Central: 380 009 awaits its departure time from Glasgow Central on 26 April 2012.

New Cumnock: Killoch - Drax loaded coal hoppers passing New Cumnock on 26 April with Freightliner 66585 in charge.

River Bran Viaduct: After a lengthy pause at Achnasheen the Great Britain continues east. The train is seen here at the east end of Loch a' Chuillinn midway between Achanalt and Lochluichart.

Bedworth: The 18.53 service to Nuneaton approaches Bedworth through encroaching vegetation on Friday 26th April.

Duirinish: Friday the 26th of April brought heavy frequent showers of sleet and rain to the Highlands. Here the sun makes a rare appearance as Black 5 no 45407 hauls the Great Britain VI west of Duirinish on the way to Kyle of Lochalsh, with Loch Kishorn in the background.

Didcot Parkway: Freightliner 66540 Ruby passing one of her admirers on Didcot station in April 2013.

High Wycombe: A down Clubman leaves High Wycombe station on the former four-track GC and GW joint section on 26 April 2014. That creeper on the cutting wall, which contains 1.2 million bricks - give or take a dozen - looks rather tenacious. [compare to image 49508]

Bourne End: A train for Maidenhead comes off the Marlow branch on a Spring Saturday morning in 2014. Notice the signalling shed for the token on the right.

Leamington Spa: A surprising number of passengers changed at Leamington Spa from the fast service on the left (the loco-hauled Premier service to London) to the unit on the right, heading for Stratford-on-Avon. View towards Birmingham early on a Saturday morning in April 2014.

Bourne End: It's not unusual, as a Welsh chap once sang, to find old rails used as fence posts; but this bridge rail is in use to protect the corner of Bourne End goods shed from assaults by passing road vehicles. Notice the old gate pivot to the left.

Loudwater: An early motorway opening and a late railway closure: this concrete box was cast into the Loudwater viaduct on the M40 circa 1969 to allow the railway from Bourne End (behind) to High Wycombe (ahead) to pass under the road. It was only used for trains for about six months.

High Wycombe: Former railway buildings at High Wycombe in April 2014 see image [[47130]]. Here are the remains of the entrance, offices, and train shed used from 1846 to 1864. Part of the current Chiltern Railways station can be seen on the right.

Loudwater: If all of the trackbed from Bourne End to High Wycombe was as clear as this section, I think the railway would have been re-opened by now. Unfortunately, intense building of flats between the A40 crossing and High Wycombe station has provided a major obstacle to reinstatement. Scene in April 2014 looking North-West from Treadaway Hill. Blunsdon: Scene on the Swindon and Cricklade Railway on 26 April 2014 with ex-GWR 0-6-2T no 5637, currently on loan from the East Somerset Railway, departing with a train for Taw Valley Halt.

High Wycombe: Looking South to High Wycombe town in April 2014, the outbuildings and gable end of the third and current (1906) station can be clearly seen. The building in the background is less well known. The near section with roller doors was an engine shed - more recently a car tyre fitting centre - while the larger building beyond it was the original 1846 train shed, used until 1864. The station entrance and offices are hidden behind the train shed, which is listed Grade 2.

West Wycombe: A model of information provision on footpaths along old railway routes. Polite, informal, helpful, and accurate. Other councils please note. The line in question is from Bourne End (to the right) to High Wycombe.

Bourne End: Modern property boundaries often indicate former land uses. This innocuous looking path along some Buckinghamshire garden fences - which curves right as the trackbed to High Wycombe curves left - follows a former branch into the Soho paper mills - one of several paper mills in this valley.

Blunsdon: Metropolitan No 1 with a departure from Blunsdon station on 26 April 2014.

High Wycombe: Amazing what you find when you take down a few old posters. Seriously outdated station sign at High Wycombe in April 2014. The connections to Marlow and Maidenhead were severed some 44 years ago.

Taw Valley Halt: 5637 at Taw Valley Halt on the the Swindon and Cricklade Railway on 26 April 2014.

Dundee Museum of Transport: Part of the railway corner at the new Dundee Museum of Transport which opened on 26 April this year. The Museum is located on Market Mews, just off Market Street.

High Wycombe: The twin track standard gauge Hughenden viaduct strides confidently over a complex traffic island in High Wycombe. The puzzle is, why does the retaining wall for the former single track broad gauge viaduct alongside look so recent? The answer is that it was built at the same time as the traffic system - about 30 years ago. This modernization swept away a number of railway arch business premises; and also, according to a lifelong resident, a rather dodgy pub.

Heriot: Looking north over the site of the former Heriot station on 26 April 2015. View is towards Edinburgh with the A7 and its associated roadworks on the right. The station building has now been demolished, the platform remains have gone and the old level crossing link with the village is no more. Modern day pedestrian access is provided by a new DDA compliant underpass in the centre of the picture. Vehicle access from the A7 is via a new road with overbridge behind the camera.

Aviemore: Ivatt 2MT 2-6-0 46512 alongside the Strathsey platform at Aviemore station on 26 April 2017 with a train of empty stock.

Aviemore: Fading light at Aviemore on the afternoon of 26 April 2017. Approaching from the south is the late running ScotRail 1334 Edinburgh - Inverness, while stabled on the Strathspey Railway siding beyond the fence is GBRf 66746 in 'Royal Scotsman' colours.

Hoghton: Northern 142055 hurries over the level crossing at the site of Hoghton station while dropping down the gradient towards Bamber Bridge. This was a Colne to Blackpool South service on 26th April 2017. In March 2020 this Pacer was reported stored serviceable at Gascoigne Wood near Worksop. June 2020 update - 142055 is going to the Foxfield Railway, but will it be used on the steep gradient down to the colliery I wonder?

Glenfinnan: The Jacobite making a rousing departure from Glenfinnan.

Hoghton: No.9 back on the line. Following overhaul, and prior to being used on the Great Briton X tour, A4 60009 took a test train round the Carnforth to Carnforth loop. The LNER Pacific is seen here passing through Hoghton on 26th April 2017.

Leeds Midland Road TMD: Looking across the sidings and running lines to the Freightliner TMD at Leeds Midland Road, with the two first built class 70s stabled at the eastern end of the long term stored loco line. 70002 is straight ahead, with the cab of 70001 to the right. [Ref query 1051]

Aviemore: GBRf 66746 in special 'Belmond Royal Scotsman' livery, stabled on the SRS access line at Aviemore on 26 April 2017.

Stourton: GBRf 66719 heads west, passing the Freightliner Midland Road TMD, with a loaded working from the recently rail connected Tarmac Arcow Quarry near Horton in Ribblesdale. The rake of wagons appear to be the new GBRf aggregates wagons created by shortening former bottom discharge coal wagons, by removing the centre hopper section, to make them more suitable for loading fully with the heavier aggregates.

Alloa: Passengers at Alloa on a fine spring morning in April 2018 amble along the platform to board the next train for Glasgow Queen Street.

Alloa [1st]: Arriving in Alloa just ahead of the rain on 26 April 2018 is the 0920 from Glasgow Queen Street. The train is running past the site of the original Alloa station - now occupied by commercial premises and car parking. Alloa: Recent electrification work at Alloa is apparent as the next scheduled ScotRail service to Glasgow Queen Street awaits its departure time at the platform in light rain on 26 April 2018.

Breich: .An Edinburgh Waverley to Glasgow Central DMU passing through the old station at Breich, West Lothian, in April 2018, some five months after notice of closure had been withdrawn following a public outcry. Eight weeks later the station was temporarily closed for around three months, during which time a pre-electrification rebuild was carried out. This included demolition of the old station footbridge and provision of improved ramped access to both platforms from the A706 road bridge (from which the photograph was taken).

Shimbashi Tokyo: The Class C11 (C11$B7A(B)) is a type of 2-6-4T steam locomotive built by the Japanese Government Railways and the Japanese National Railways from 1932 to 1947 in front of Shimbashi station Tokyo with a very GWR looking signal post.

Breich: Wide view of Breich station on 26 April 2018 as a westbound service runs through. The recently installed electrification masts standing in the background continue behind the camera. The fate of the footbridge can be in little doubt.

St Peters Square: As part of the opening of Metrolink's Second City Crossing in Manchester the St Peters Square tramstop has been rebuilt with four tracks, as seen here on a wet 27th March 2018. The rebuild also seems to have sorted the previous drainage problems See image [[44231]].

Cambus Loop: A 158 heads east towards Alloa after clearing Cambus level crossing on 26 April 2018. Cambus Loop is visible just beyond the train, although the imposing spire of St Mungo's Church on Bedford Place is now all but lost amongst the new catenary see image [[17321]].

Bearsden: The delayed 11.29 for Edinburgh at Bearsden on 26th April 2018.

Cambus: I remember it was wet... oh yes... The 1020 Glasgow Queen Street - Alloa about to pass over Cambus level crossing in pouring rain on 26 April 2018.

Breich: Lucky escape. Formal notice of closure of Breich station was announced on 21 June 2017, with notice withdrawn 5 months later. A report in 'The Scotsman' of 15 November 2017 reads 'Closure-threatened Breich Station, which has fewer than three passengers a week, has been reprieved after a public outcry.' The photograph shows a Glasgow Central - Edinburgh Waverley service pulling into a deserted platform 2 on 26 April 2018, with work on electrification of the route in progress on either side of the station.

Alloa West Junction: The 1041 Alloa - Glasgow Queen Street about to encounter some serious rain moving south from the Ochil Hills on 26 April 2018. The train has just run through the site of Alloa West Junction and is about to pass the Clackmannanshire Cricket Club grounds at 'The Arns' as it heads for Cambus level crossing. The apparent new ScotRail Blue & Red colour scheme is due to the reflections from two lineside containers.

Bathgate LMD: The 1126 Helensburgh Central - Edinburgh Waverley, shortly after leaving Bathgate station on 26 April 2018. A location much changed in the past 10 years see image [[20265]]. Even the overgrown lay-by area I once used on the other side of the road behind the camera is now the entrance to a posh block of flats!

Kirknewton: The busy level crossing at Kirknewton on 26 April 2018, looking north west along the B7031. The 1426 ex-Waverley has just restarted its journey to Glasgow Central.

Cambus Loop: ScotRail 158709 approaching Cambus loop on 26 April 2018 with the 1041 Alloa - Glasgow Queen Street. The line between Stirling and Alloa reopened in mid April following a month's closure, during which electrification masts and power lines were erected along the route. Electric services are scheduled to commence in December this year.

Bearsden: The delayed 12.59 to Milngavie at Bearsden on 26th April 2018.

Farington Junction: GBRf 66772 joins the West Coast Main Line at Farington Junction with a train of cement tankers working from Clitheroe to Avonmouth on 26th April 2019.

Strathbungo: The former Strathbungo station was demolished on 6th August 2022. Seen here on 26 April 2021, latterly used as a shop.

Strathbungo: The 18.57 from East Kilbride to Glasgow Central, formed by 156513 and 156462, passes underneath the old Strathbungo station on 26th April 2021.

Strathbungo: The rear of the Strathbungo station building, closed to passengers in 1962. It was used as a shop for many years but demolished on 6 August 2022.

Strathbungo: The former Strathbungo station footbridge, dating from 1877 and Grade C-listed, has been refurbished as seen here on 26th April 2021.

Muirhouse South Junction: The 19.00 from Kilmarnock to Glasgow Central passes Muirhouse South Junction on 26th April 2021. 156476 is the unit.

Bay Horse: 68034 accelerates a TPE push-pull set on a training run away from a temporary speed restriction (or p-way slack as we used to call them) through the cutting at Forton on 26th April 2021. The train was working from Carlisle to Crewe, having gone north from Manchester that morning.

Hellifield: GBrF 66769 'League Managers Association' heads 6E77 16:43 Arcow Quarry Gbrf to Hunslet Tilcon Gbrf approaching Hellifield station. The train left Arcow heading North to Blea Moor where it ran round and waited in the up loop for 2H95 16:18 Carlisle to Leeds to pass before proceeding south to Hunslet.

Preston: Preston station Main entrance seemed to be in need of a wee bit of TLC in April 2022.

Arnside: Not the 'GBXIV' railtour, but the ECS from GBXIV (Day 5 of 9) making the short journey from Grange-over-Sands, where the passengers were overnighting, to Carnforth for servicing. The train had run from Stirling to Carlisle behind 46115 and 45690 'Leander' took over from there round the Cumbrian Coast. The 4-6-0 is passing the closed Middlebarrow Quarry between Arnside and Silverdale.

Carlisle : 46115 'Scots Guardsman' and its support coach have been released from the empty coaching stock of the 'Great Britain XIV' and are waiting to move off the A Road at Carlisle Citadel on 26th April 2022. The train then continued around the Cumbrian Coast behind 45690 'Leander'.

Preston: Avanti West Coast Pendolino 390013 awaits the off from Preston's platform 4 on the 15.53 service to Edinburgh Waverley.

Preston: North throat of Preston Station taken from rarely used bay beyond Platform 3. This sometimes sees a 'Thunderbird' stabled [[44188]] but little else.

Arnside: Middlebarrow Quarry, between Arnside and Silverdale, was operational until around 2000 and would have continued but planning permission for further extraction was refused in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It was rail served for a long time but the sidings closed before the quarry itself. Passengers on this Preston to Carlisle local service will get a glimpse of the huge quarry as it passes over the now chained-up level crossing on 26th April 2022. The two sidings were on the land in the foreground and there was also a loading plant, now demolished.
