Towards the south end of the former excursion platform 1 at Scarborough stands Falsgrave signal box, seen here looking north west on 28 September 2008. The length of this platform can be appreciated by looking back beyond Belgrave Terrace Road Bridge towards the dome standing above the station in the right background and the FTP 185 unit that can just be seen stabled in platform 2 (whose buffer stops stand alongside those of platform 1).

The 1907 NER Falsgrave signal box, standing at the south end of platform 1 at Scarborough station, photographed on 28 September 2008. The grade 2 listed structure was the recent recipient of the Westinghouse Signalling Award as part of the National Heritage scheme. This followed a centenary 5-month, restoration project, carried out by Construction Marine Ltd in consultation with Network Rail and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, which took it back to how it would have looked when new. According to signalman Mick Hewitt this is one of the largest surviving boxes in the country which still has its mechanical workings. In the box there are 120 levers connected by Victorian engineered interlock systems, around 60% of which are still operational with 40% in regular use. Notwithstanding the restoration project, Network Rail plans to close Falsgrave by 2010. Campaigners are hoping it can then be turned into a tourist attraction.
