Description

Operational swing bridge linking Newcastle and Gateshead across the River Tyne. It opened frequently when the Tyne was busy with freight (mainly coal) traffic but these days only occasional pleasure craft venture up river although the bridge is tested monthly to ensure it is operational. The bridge control tower is in the centre and it swings on a central pier to create a channel on either side for passage. The deck is open to road traffic - vehicles and pedestrians.
