Name and dates

Seafield Branch Junction

Opened on the Kirkcaldy District Railway (North British Railway).

Description

This junction was intended to give access to Seafield Harbour, in the south of Kirkcaldy, from the Kirkcaldy District Railway (North British Railway).

The Kirkcaldy District line was a feeder for the Burntisland Docks, allowing approach from the north from the Cowdenbeath area pits. (Burntisland East Dock opened in 1901.)

This short branch would have provided access to a second harbour at Seafield, the Burntisland approarch and Seafield approach separating here for trains coming from the west.

Construction of Seafield Harbour was abandoned when the works were damaged in bad weather during construction.

Although it failed in its planned purpose the short branch - known as Seafield Siding - did see use to access a quarry, drift mine, tip and Tyrie Bleach Works.

The junction was, approximately, the end of the double track curve from the main line where it reduced to a single track before continuing west.

The Kirkcaldy District line closed in 1960. Today the formation of the line and junction can still be seen. Even the bridge by which the harbour line passed under the main line (Edinburgh and Northern Railway) remains.
