Hetton coal train runs from Seaham [1st] to Sunderland Dock via new line as far as Ryhope and Durham and Sunderland Railway to Hendon Dock. The connection at Ryhope was temporary for the ceremonial occasion.
03/08/1854Londonderry Railway
Line opened throughout. From Ryhope to Hendon Dock the line ran parallel to the Durham and Sunderland Railway.
19/08/1889Durham and Sunderland Railway
Liverpool to Newcastle train runs down Ryhope bank at too high a speed and derails at Ryhope injuring 101 passengers. Following accident all trains descending the bank were required to stop at Ryhope.
