Riccarton Signal Box

Location type

Name and dates

Riccarton Signal Box (1907-1938)

Description

This signal box was west of Riccarton and Craigie. It was located on the south side of the line opposite a short branch which ran north east over the River Irvine to serve River Bank Gas Works and the Kilmarnock tram depot.

The box opened in 1907 and closed in 1938, replaced with a ground frame.

A larger yard was developed by the ground frame as the gas works expanded. The line to the west was retained as a head shunt for the yard but was cut back so that it did ot continue west to Thirdpart Jnction. The railway was now single track.

The line was cut back to Riccarton Oil Depot around 1970.

The site is now a road, the A71.
