Name and dates

Miltonise Level Crossing (1926-1938)

Opened on the Girvan and Portpatrick Junction Railway.

Description

Or Miltonish. A level crossing between Chirmorie Summit and Glenwhilly. There were surfacemen's cottages here and a private halt for families living at the cottages.

David L Smith wrote in Tales of the Glasgow and South Western Railway:

No more does the morning express top on the Fridays to lift the housewives at the little sleeper steps and take them down to Stranraer for the weekly shopping. The 4.20 brought them back, and what a job on a dark night to find the houses - no one at home and no light to guide a driver.

The level crossing remains.
