Lochrin Basin (2001-)

Description

Today this is the eastern terminus of the Union Canal in Edinburgh, to the south west of the Old Town. A little to the west is the Leamington Lift Bridge. The site of the basin itself, which was to the south of the canal, has been infilled but the name persists for the canal end. The basin had served the Lochrin Distillery (part of which was later the Lochrin Iron Works [1st]) and other works.

Historically the canal continued north east to basins at Port Hamilton and Port Hopetoun, both across Morrison Street from Lothian Road Goods.

With competition from the railways traffic dropped significantly by 1910. The canal was cut back to Lochrin in 1921. Commercial traffic ceased in 1933 and official closure was later in 1965. The canal re-opened in 2001.
