Dunbar Cement Works

Description

This is a cement works close to the coast just east of Dunbar served by the East Coast Main Line, the former North British Railway, and the A1 which is just to the south.

The works lies to the immediate south of the railway and Oxwellmains Quarry lies to the north, although much of the area both north and south of the line has been quarried.

Sidings, served from the west, are on either side of the line. Those on the south side are for loading cement. Those on the north have been used for the 'Binliner' train from Powderhall, carrying compacted rubbish from Edinburgh for landfill, a service which no longer runs.

The origins of a works here lie with a limeworks owned by the Coltness Iron Works. This Oxwell Main Lime Works was on a much smaller scale to the present day works but occupied the same site. It was linked with a tramway to sidings by the main line.
