Description

This was the site of the Battle of Culloden fought on the 16th of April 1746. This was the last major action of the Jacobite Rising of 1745 and last major land battle in the United Kingdom. The army of Charles Edward Stuart 'Bonnie Prince Charlie' was defeated by British forces under William Augustus, the Duke of Cumberland. The battle was fought on high farmland east of Inverness.

The Culloden Battlefield is under the care of the National Trust for Scotland NTS - Culloden .

After the battle a memorial was raised and markers for the mass graves of the clans. Today the site has a car park and visitor centre.

Today the nearest station to the site is Inverness station, over 6 miles away to the west. (Historically Culloden Moor station was closer, just a mile to the east.)
