Cardenden (1851-)

Station code: CDD National Rail ScotRail
Where: Fife, Scotland
Opened on the Dunfermline Branch (Edinburgh and Northern Railway).
Open on the Fife Circle.

Description

This is a two platform station with slightly staggered platforms. A lattice footbridge survived and there are modern glazed shelters, the larger on the up (Edinburgh) bound platform.

The main station building, on the up platform, was an extraordinary mock Tudor exposed timber two floor structure with a platform canopy. This was rendered in later years, hiding the timbers.

The signal box (west end of the station) closed in 1966. This had also controlled access to Denend Colliery on the south side of the line, approached from the west. At the east end was a reversing spur on the south side from which a tramway ran to the Cardenden Colliery.

In the 1980s the station acted as a terminus for trains from Edinburgh, before the Fife Circle route became available. The line east to the triangle of junctions at Thornton was a freight only area.
