Name and dates

Benhar Level Crossing Signal Box (1889-1963)

Opened on the Shotts Branch (Monkland Railways).

Description

This box was about half way between Westcraigs and Shotts Loops. It controlled the line, a level crossing, sidings and access to several collieries.

The line opened around 1860. It was on the south side of the line, on the west side of the level crossing. This box opened in 1889, replacing Benhar Pits Junction, a little to the south west.

The box was replaced in 1920 with the opening of new sidings associated with new mines. The new larger box was on the north side of the line and east side of the level crossing.

The box lasted until line closure in 1963. The line south of Shotts had closed in 1950.
