Kaikoura: There are only three main passenger lines on the NZ rail network and all are operated primarily to allow tourist traffic to soak up the magnifcent scenery rather than an effective means of transport; that role is provided by domestic airlines. On the South Island the 'Coastal Pacific' provides a daily return service from the main city of Christchurch to the port of Picton in the north and the connection with the Inter-island ferry to Wellington. At the intermediate station of Kaikoura the relieving train crew is obviously being well looked-after by one of the onboard staff. The 3'6'' gauge locomotive is one of the DXC class built by General Electric in the USA in 1976.
Haymarket [Tram]: Edinburgh Trams have installed a new platform in the loop at Haymarket Yards, for use when trams have to turn back here.
Port Glasgow: An aerial view of the new accessible footbridge at Port Glasgow.
Fort Matilda: A Derby DMU arriving at Fort Matilda with a Gourock-Glasgow service. The picture dates from early 1967, not long before the start of electric services on the line.
Edinburgh Waverley: LNER Azuma 801221 awaits departure from platform 2 at Waverley with the 17.00 to Kings Cross on 21 November 2023.
Harringay: The dreadful shack at Harringay, that has passed as the entrance to the ECML station for more than 50 years (see [[76903]]), and must be one of the longest-lasting temporary buildings, has finally been replaced but this is hardly a big improvement, as seen looking towards the east side of the line, on a freezing 2nd December 2023.
Biarritz-Ville: The current station which serves Biarritz is sited a few miles from the centre of the town but until closure there was a central station in what is a popular holiday resort. It was named Gare du Midi and although it had been electrified as early as 1924 train services ended in September 1980 and when I visited it in July 1983 it was rather the worse for wear. As far as I know it was brought back to life as a performance venue and tourist office in the early 1990s.
Birkenhead North: View from the footbridge looking at the platform side of the magnificent station building at Birkenhead North on 14 November 2023. The EMU maintenance depot is on the north side of the line, a short distance after the overbridge seen at the far end of the platforms.
Kelty: View north to Kelty station from the minor road at Hilton Farm in 2023. The railway and Aitken Colliery have been landscaped. Quite a contrast to the K M Falconer photograph of 1965 which can be found on page 93 of Scottish Steam in Colour by Hugh Ballantyne.
Dundee: Simultaneous departures up the gradient from Dundee's platforms 3 and 1 as 170433 heads for Glasgow Queen Street and 43126 leads a slightly late running Inter7City HST from Aberdeen to Edinburgh.
Hardengreen Junction: Site of the former Hardengreen Junctionon a sunny spring morning in 2016. The southbound train approaching is a Borders Railway service destined for Tweedbank. The Peebles Loop once diverged from the Waverley Route at this point and ran south west towards Bonnyrigg. A notable tall signal box once stood to the left of the junction at this point - see image [[17896]].
Winwick Junction: A popular place to watch the trains. 40181 has a mixed Warrington to Carlisle airbrake freight passing Winwick in June 1983. No doubt some Scottish Traffic on this. I note the Tiger Clay wagon in the consist among others.
Basingstoke: Sunlight making a nice glint on a VEP unit at Basingstoke in 1973.
Stirling: 26 February 1963 and BRC&W Type 2 Diesel No D5301 is biding its time between turns at the north end of Stirling station. Note the covering of snow on the Ochil Hills, which was there for a long time during the hard winter of 1962/3.
