Auchterhouse [1st]: This was the view east at Auchterhouse in 1998 with the deviation route in the trees on the right. The original line ran east from this viewpoint to the tree in the centre left of the photograph, continuing in a near straight line to Balbeuchley Top a mile and a half to the east. Some of the original route has been ploughed out, but a considerable amount can still be traced.
Pollokshields East: 320 302 calls at Pollokshields East with the 10.20 from Glasgow Central to Newton.
Creswell: 20107 and 20096 with a York to Crewe GBRf 'Noah's Ark' charity rail tour at Creswell on 9th August 2015. This one way trip ran with two 47s Glasgow to Carlisle, two 66s to Newcastle and York and then these two 20s covered various lines in the Midlands on the way to Crewe.
Luton Airport DART station: Train on the brand new £300 million Luton Airport DART (Direct Airport Rapid Transport) line approaching Luton Airport DART station to take up the very first journey on this line to Luton Airport itself, a journey of just three minutes, on the afternoon of Friday, 10th March 2023. The people inside are DART staff who, when the train drew into the station and the doors opened to allow everyone on board, seemed mighty pleased that so many people had come to ride the line on its very first day. Of course, the fact that it was free of charge on this day might have had something to do with the numbers!
Luton Airport DART station: The very first train to run with passengers on the brand new Luton Airport DART line is seen here at Luton Airport DART station, having returned from London Luton Airport station, on the afternoon of Friday, 10th March 2023. There was no service on the morning of this day (passengers to and from the airport still had to use the bus) as the line was not due to open until 14.00 but for reasons that were not made clear did not, in fact, open until 14.25.
Luton Airport DART station: The very first train to run with passengers to London Luton Airport on the brand new Luton Airport DART Railway is now back at Luton Airport DART station after its maiden voyage, on the afternoon of Friday, 10th March 2023.
Kirkton of Auchterhouse Level Crossing: This was the level crossing of the original course of the Dundee and Newtyle Railway with the road to Kirkton of Auchterhouse showing the former trackbed stretching away to Pitpointie Farm and Balbeuchley Top. The photograph was taken in 1998 looking east along the former single track line. The posts (since removed) were said to be original level crossing gate posts, the last remaining. If correct that's very impressive for a line opened in 1831 and closed in 1860. Behind the camera the route west to Auchterhouse had been largely ploughed out.
Buxton: Neither freight nor passenger services were being handled at Buxton following heavy snowfall. The only signs of activity were the signallers footsteps in the snow as he made his way towards his box at the start of his shift.
Hall Road: 507015 arrives at Hall Road on an afternoon Southport to Hunts Cross service on 26th January 2023. The site of the EMU depot on the left has been covered by residential properties.
Bay Horse: Plenty of snow around the UK on 10th March but the west of Lancashire got off lightly again. 88007 'Electra' powers the 'Tesco' northwards through the cutting at Forton but would be replaced by a diesel at Carlisle as the train was routed via the G&SW due to the Carstairs closure.
Alexandra Palace: 313051, to Stevenage via Hertford North, departing from Alexandra Palace on 18th April 2019.
Baldragon: View west at the site of Baldragon station in 1998. The later platform was on the right. The line continued west on the left side of today's houses which were built on the site of the goods yard. Houses have since been built on the site of the passenger station.
Murrayfield: Looking north on the Granton Branch, towards the viaduct over the Water of Leith, in a rare moment when cyclists were not passing through the old station at Murrayfield on 27th February 2023. A section of the southbound platform, which saw its last passengers in 1962, has been cut through for a cycle route.
Brighouse Basins: Changeline bridges, which allowed the horse to cross the canal without unhitching the rope, usually have a straight ramp on one side and the curved path on the other. Perhaps because it sits by the entrance to the upper basin, this bridge at Brighouse has both ramps on both sides. This view looks east on 15th February 2023.
Muirhouse Central Junction: 156504 and 156430 pass Muirhouse Central Junction with the 10.47 from Glasgow Central to East Kilbride, seen from the platform at Pollokshields East on 25 February 2023.
