Lordship Lane: A short piece of embankment of the old Crystal Palace High Level branch of the LCDR, looking north from where it crossed Lordship Lane on an elaborately ornamented bridge, now completely disappeared. The line opened on 1st August 1865 with Lordship Lane station opened a month later on 1st September. It was on the south side of the bridge but no trace remains, the site being covered by housing. This station was only three quarters of a mile west of Forest Hill station on the LBSCR's London & Croydon line, which paralleled the High Level branch for most of its way. Closure of the entire branch on 20th September 1954 was not, therefore, entirely surprising. This view is on 14th January 2023.

Hagside Level Crossing: Since my last visit to Hagside, near Radcliffe, the old control centre/signalbox has been demolished. The public road itself has been downgraded to a footpath and access track, and with that the barriers have been removed although trams pass the location at reduced speed. Metrolink 3085 passes the scene in January 2023 heading towards Manchester. See image [[38231]] for the same location in 2012.

Chippenham: Chippenham station has an unusual feature, in that the platform adjacent to the main entrance, ticket office and cafe has no tracks - it used to serve the Calne branch. You have to cross a footbridge to catch a train, such as the IET to Temple Meads seen here.

Tregenna Castle Hotel: The former Great Western Railway Tregenna Castle Hotel in St Ives, Cornwall, seen from the grounds in April 2012. The hotel passed to the Hotels Executive in 1948. This became British Transport Hotels in 1953 and the Tregenna Castle remained with BTH until 1983 when it and BTH were sold off.

Upper Sydenham: South of the former Lordship Lane station, the old Crystal Palace High Level branch opened in 1865 entered a cutting in the well-wooded slopes of Sydenham Hill and then the 400 yards long Crescent Wood Tunnel, emerging briefly below Wells Park Road before entering the 439 yards long Paxton tunnel, named after the designer of the Crystal Palace (which burned down in 1936) for the final haul to the commodious High Level terminus. Between the two tunnels, Upper Sydenham station was opened on 1st August 1884 and lasted for 70 years until the line's closure on 20th September 1954. Its entrance building survives to this day, seen here on the bitterly cold afternoon of Saturday, 14th January 2023, now in residential use, and is the most significant memorial to this long abandoned London suburban line.

Acton Wells Junction: Power car 43166 and Inter City liveried set, possibly empty stock working, crossing the Grand Union Canal near Old Oak Common around 1991. The girder bridge in the background carries the line from Willesden Junction High Level down to Richmond, both lines joining at nearby Acton Wells Junction.

Stranraer Harbour Junction: Plenty going on around Stranraer engine shed in August 1964. Steam on the shed itself and a Hunslet 0-6-0DM shunting the yard. The view looks to have been taken from the front of a DMU on the approach to Stranraer Town station.
