Ware: The Hertford East branch from the Cambridge main line north of Broxbourne is, nominally, a double track line but site difficulties mean that the delightful intermediate station at Ware has only ever had a single bi-directional platform. The line and station were opened by the Northern & Eastern Railway Company in 1843 and this view is from 317 508 at head and 317 343 at rear making their first stop with the ex-11.09 service from Hertford East to Liverpool Street on a stultifyingly hot Saturday, 16th July 2022, the Last Day of class 317 units in service.
Minnivey Nos 4,5: NCB West Ayr Area Barclay 0-4-0T No 10 near Minnivey colliery, on the NCB's Waterside system, heading for Dunaskin with a mixed load. The spoil wagons being propelled would be destined for Cutler tip.
Adlington Junction: This bridge carries the A6 in Adlington over the route of the old Lancashire Union line, which ran from here to Standish on the WCML. The junction with the surviving Euxton Junction to Bolton line was a hundred yards or so behind the camera. Just beyond the modern brick office block behind the parapet lies the surviving building from White Bear station [[76459]] and then the largely walkable trackbed continues through Red Rock towards Wigan.
Hexham: If you know Hexham station, you might expect this to be a Carlisle train. However, it was about to leave the station, pass over a crossover, and reverse smartly into platform 1. Hence, it was a Newcastle train. I guess if you know the station, you would know that..

Summit Tunnel (Littleborough): There are other examples of Victorian engineering ingenuity around the famous Summit Tunnel. Immediately west of the tunnel this stone and iron bridge still carries the River Roch over the railway. 195004 leads a pair of 195s towards the short Summit West Tunnel, with the main tunnel immediately beyond that behind the camera, on 20th July 2022.
