Old Street [CSLR]: LU 1995 stock with a Northern Line service to Morden departing from Old Street on 14th January 2022. This was the last day, for five months, of through trains to Morden via the Bank branch with its temporary closure between Moorgate and Kennington for reconstruction of the platforms at Bank station.
West Mills: Viewed from one of several bridges that took the Balerno line over the Water of Leith, the former Scott's Porridge Oats mill at Colinton in 1993. In the early 20th Century a pair of sidings accessed the mill over the bridge that can be seen.
Oxenholme: Black 5 45445 sets off from Oxenholme with the Windermere portion of the 11.55 Euston to Carlisle.
Ullock: I was hoping to see some railway remains in Ullock in January 2022, but did not expect to find this MkI coach on the formation. This is now part of a private garden, including the underpass bridge. The station was off to the right of this picture but closed in 1931, although goods trains continued to pass through until 1954.
Todd Lane Junction: A view along the trackbed of the former line from Lostock Hall Junction (behind the camera) towards Todd Lane Junction. Amongst the trees to the left there remains a substantial telegraph pole complete with cross arms, insulators and two sets of stay wires. At the base of the pole there are two sets of concrete posts which would have supported junction boxes. Other railway artefacts still exist in the undergrowth in this area some 50 years after the closure of the line.
Kilmarnock: The BAM Nuttall Partnership Award plaque presented to the Kilmarnock Station Railway Heritage Trust on 26th January 2022, marking the station's high quality refurbishment.
Largs: Network rail inspection train topped and tailed by Colas 37 116 and 37 219 pauses at Largs late on a Friday evening.
Scotland Street Tunnel: A 'Red Whee'l has been unveiled at Scotland Street. The text reads: 'Scotland Street Railway Tunnel 1847-1868 Built to link Waverley with the Fife ferries, this tunnel was so steep that it required trains to be cable-hauled by a stationary steam engine.'
Forge Valley: Views of the former Forge Valley station, which is now standing empty after the site was vacated recently by North Yorkshire C.C. Highways. The station building and platform are still generally intact, although a derelict portable building is on the platform alongside the building. The goods shed is in good condition due to it being used for storage of items over the years. There is a long entrance road up to the station, with an old concrete gatepost on the right by the entrance. What the future holds for the station only time will tell. View is westerly showing the portable building across the platform, and a clothes post from when the station was lived in over the years since closure.
Mornington Crescent: LUL 1995 stock heading away from the camera as it departs from Mornington Crescent with a Northern Line service to High Barnet on 5th June 2021. This station survived a closure attempt in 1958 but was closed at weekends from 1970 for many years; however, it is now open full-time again. There was a period of temporary closure, between 1992 and 1998, to renew the lifts when the opportunity was also taken to refurbish the platforms too.
Auchmuty Paper Mill: End of the line on the Tullis Russell branch, with the River Leven on the left, pictured in 1993. Much of the track was recovered for the Fife Heritage Railway at Kirkland.
Tywyn Wharf: Having run round its train, 0-4-2T No.7 'Tom Rolt' is now ready to depart from Tywyn Wharf station with a Talyllyn Railway train to Nant Gwernol, on 24th May 2016. No.7 was rebuilt at the railway's Pendre Works in 1991 from an 0-4-0WT locomotive and named after the founder of the Talyllyn Railway Society. Without him we may never have had all the heritage lines the UK now enjoys.
Thornton Shed [2nd]: J38 0-6-0 65914 rolls past Thornton MPD in September 1966.
Barton and Broughton: The last operational 87 in the UK, 87002 'Royal Sovereign', splendidly liveried in Inter-City Swallow colours and paused for stock inspection in Barton loop during a test run from Crewe to Carlisle on 14th January 2022. This was the second test run in two days, ahead of a railtour programme in 2022.
