Bala Junction: Bala station, Bala Lake Railway, in July 1980. This narrow gauge line runs on a section of the old standard gauge Ruabon to Barmouth line as far as Llanuwchyllyn, but was closed by BR in 1965. This eastern terminus is more or less on the site of the old Bala Junction station, where the branch to Blaenau Ffestiniog via Bala once diverged. This was closed between Bala and Blaenau Ffestiniog in 1960 but the stub from Bala to Bala Junction closed concurrently with the Ruabon/Barmouth line in 1965. It is little changed today (See image [[68648]]) but work is now under way to extend the railway back into the town of Bala where a new station will be constructed. Further east between Corwen and Llangollen, the old Barmouth line is now part of the standard gauge heritage Llangollen Railway.

Gateshead West: Network Rail will begin major work to repair and strengthen Wellington Street railway bridge on Monday 24 January, in a project which will make sure it remains fit for purpose for years to come. The work will see the bridge, which was built in 1902, strengthened and repairs to steelwork carried out. A section of the bridge will also be painted, helping to improve the look of the structure. [This bridge is on the Greensfield Junction to High Street Junction [Gateshead] alignment. -RS]

Glasgow Airport: A proposed station for Glasgow Airport. [Over the years there has been a considerable number of proposals to serve the airport including; a branch from Arkleston Junction (east of Paisley Gilmour Street) using the route of the former Renfrew branch with a bridge over the Cart to reach the airport from the east; a people mover at street level from the airport south to Paisley Gilmour Street; a branch from Paisley St James (for which land was purchased); several variations on the terminus of a light railway largely following the south bank of the Clyde via the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (Southern General), Braehead and Renfrew; a through station on the 'Clyde Metro' with a line from the north bank crossing the Clyde to serve Braehead, Renfrew, the airport and Paisley. -RS]

Bury Bolton Street: This model of Bury Bolton Street is displayed in the Transport Museum, which is in the old Castlecroft Goods Shed. The grand station entrance with its clock tower was destroyed by fire in 1947 and replaced by the current flat roofed brick structure. Just behind is the old East Lancashire Railway headquarters. This building lasted until demolition in 1974, six year before BR closed the station.

Brock Water Troughs: 87002 'Royal Sovereign', on its second loaded test run to Carlisle in January 2022, heading north at Brock. Lineside trees prevented photos looking south from Badger Bridge for a long time but Network Rail has cleared the trackside opening things up. Kings Cross: Plenty of interest at Kings Cross station as D0280 Falcon backs down past the distinctive signal box to join its train on 1 September 1962. The shadows suggest it was around mid-day. 'Falcon', built by Brush in 1961 as a one-off prototype, had twin Maybach engines like the Westerns but electric rather than hydraulic transmission. In 1970 it was purchased by British Rail and ran for a further five years as a Class 53 numbered 1200. It was scrapped in 1976.
