Bathgate Yard: Meeting of young and old in Bathgate yard in 1965, between the relatively modern Standard Class 2 78050, less than ten years old, and the venerable ex-NB J36 65243 Maude, by then more than seventy.
Rutherglen: Standard Class 4 2-6-0 76074 after arrival at Rutherglen on Saturday 3rd October 1964. The Central Low Level line closed to passenger traffic later that weekend, and this was the final service from Dalmuir Riverside.
Helmshore: An early postcard of Ravenshore Viaduct, just to the south of Helmshore station. An Aspinall 2-4-2T in full L&YR livery is climbing the gradient from Stubbins Junction with a passenger train heading towards Accrington. Note the curious short vehicle behind the engine. The skew arch viaduct still crosses the River Ogden but this view is obscured by trees nowadays.
Bournemouth: 34015 'Exmouth' has just arrived on the turntable at Bournemouth Shed on 22 September 1966, having brought in a train from the Weymouth direction. There was plenty of activity in the shed, even though the end of Southern Region steam was less than a year away.
Norton Bridge Junction: Sixty sustainably powered weather stations are now monitoring the railway between London Euston and Carlisle to keep passengers and freight moving safely. Network Rail has installed the solar-powered weather watchers on the West Coast main line and across parts of the North West so engineers can react fast before and during extreme weather events. Stirling: Work to renew the roof at Stirling station has opened a window to the past and unearthed a treasure trove of papers and post cards - some dating back to the First World War. Amongst those postcards, which dated back as far as 1912, were several dated April 1916 and had been sent to troops and regiments stationed in the Barracks at Cambusbarron, requesting that they collect kit bags and parcels from the station.
