Stobcross Crane: This photograph was a publicity shot by the North British Locomotive Company. It was used in a commemorative book; North British Locomotive Company 1903-1953 50th Anniversary. The caption was 'Class Y.P. Locomotive (Indian State Railways) Completely assembled and protected against the passage, one of a shipment to India is hoisted on board ship at Stobcross Quay, Glasgow'. (Taken 1952.) The locomotive was being lifted by the [[Cowans, Sheldon & Co]] crane of 1931 which still stands. This 4-6-2 was one of a batch of 100 built at the [[Hyde Park Works [2nd] ]] (Y for yard/metre gauge, P for passenger). Others of this modified Baldwin design were built in Germany and India. Two of the NBL locomotives survive - number 2001 'Janki' at Samastipur and 2508 at Kacheguda station, Hyderabad. In the background the [[Queen's Dock]] can be seen and further beyond the University of Glasgow (on the horizon). Does anyone know the name of the vessel in the Queen's Dock? The name appears to be 'Brothers ...'.

Thornton Shed [2nd]: J37 64618 pauses briefly, just across the tracks from the roadway entrance to the depot, at Thornton on 20th September 1966. After nearly forty six years service the old 0-6-0 was withdrawn from here at the end of the following month and cut up at Motherwell Machinery and Scrap in February 1967.

Braeside Junction: The base of the point lever at Braeside Junction, with a piece of track just visible in a gap in the vegetation to the right, in August 2020. The tree growing between the tracks shows how long the line has now been disused. As a boy I spent many happy hours on walks changing the points here!

Newton-le-Willows Junction: A view towards Newton-le-Willows Junction (by the M6 bridge), from about half way along the curve from Lowton Junction, on 8th February 2021. The less than shiny rails confirm this curve sees only limited trains, although a single Glasgow to Liverpool TPE EMU runs this way in the 2020 timetable, rather than through St. Helens, and the Seaforth - Mossend container trains also take this route.

Solway Junction: The 1548 Glasgow Central - Newcastle Central eastbound shortly after restarting from Annan on 21 May 2008. The train is on the single line section to Gretna and is passing a PW team working on the redoubling of the line. The lookout in the left background, whose klaxon warned of the trains approach, is standing on the site of Solway Junction which, prior to 1921, provided a link south to reach the Solway Viaduct. The redoubled Annan - Gretna section finally became operational in August 2008 (see [[20209]]).
