Kirby Cross: Since the abolition of the short-lived crossing loop at Frinton-on-Sea, Kirby Cross is now the only crossing loop on the single track branch to Walton-On-The Naze in Essex from Thorpe-le-Soken on the Colchester to Clacton-on-Sea line. This is the platform for Walton seen from a service to Colchester Town calling at the opposite platform on 18th September 2020, even though no Walton-bound train was booked to cross here at this time of the evening. All the original platform buildings that I remember from the 1960s (See image [[46517]]) have sadly been demolished and replaced with those ubiquitous and horrible bus stop style waiting shelters.

Glasgow Central: Ticket sized timetable of the Glasgow to Euston and return services in 1974/75. Very handy little double-sided card, that is now also a reminder of the then newly electrified route. The 'Royal Scot' was timed at just five hours, while most other services only took a few minutes longer.

Broughty Pier: View over the train ferry slip at Broughty Pier on 18th September 2020. A tramway ran from the railway terminus to the barracks on the right.

Carlisle Upperby Shed: An array of steam power at Carlisle Upperby in February 1963, as Black 5 44902 passes with a short local freight. Visible, in whole or in part, are rebuilt Patriot 45532 'Illustrious', Stanier 8F 48731, Midland 3F 44399 and Ivatt 2MT 2-6-0 46432. Further back, one can spot a stored Princess Royal and a sign of things to come in the shape of an English Electric Type 4 diesel.

Didcot Railway Centre: No1, 'Bonnie Prince Charlie', a 1949 RSH 0-4-0ST, was only twenty years old when it arrived at GWS Didcot after working on coal wharves on the south coast, but of course is now over seventy.

Rainford Junction: I didn't expect to be photographing Pacers in 2020, but several have been put back into service with Northern to increase train capacity during the Covid emergency. However, they must run coupled with PRM compliant Sprinter units. 142087 is on the rear of a train departing from Rainford and joining the singled line to Kirkby on 14th August. See image [[21273]] taken forty years earlier at this spot, since when the vegetation growth has been considerable both around the signal box and on the old curving Ormskirk platform. The catch points have gone too but the time honoured handing over of the single line token continues.

Big Pit Mining Museum: You can see from this picture that Big Pit Halt is readily visible from the Big Pit mining museum. The branch and halt were built to advertise the rest of the railway when they found out that tourists came to Blaenavon to go underground in the mining museum, but did not know that the steam railway was there!

Hellifield: 35018 'British India Line' runs through Hellifield station to go on the front of the WCRC charter service to Carlisle that is sitting in the down loop on 8 September 2020. The loco had earlier been waiting in the up loop [See image 74396]

Dunkeld and Birnam: Continental height platforms are fine for the continent, but our trains are high entry by comparison. Dunkeld is one of the few stations where you get to appreciate this, especially when the doors don't quite line up with the portable steps. Added to this the other platform has no access apart from the aged footbridge. DDA compliant? Not quite.
