Plains

In this photograph, believed to date from 1968, a Swindon DMU is heading east along the Bathgate line from Airdrie, about to pass the level crossing at the closed Plains station. The photographer did not record the reason for this unusual occurrence but, as he took several shots that day of Swindon units in the Airdrie area, the train was almost certainly a diverted Edinburgh service running from Glasgow Queen St Low Level because of a problem on the normal route via Falkirk High.
