Lowestoft

The windswept concourse at the UK's most easterly station, Lowestoft, on 3rd May 2023. It opened as Lowestoft on 1st July 1847 as the terminus of a branch from Reedham on the Yarmouth and Norwich Railway (via Berney Arms). Rebuilt in Italianate style in 1855, a line to Beccles joining the East Suffolk Line there was opened on 1st June 1859, followed by the line to Yarmouth South Town on 1st October 1903 which had a station called Lowestoft North so this became Lowestoft Central. That line closed in 1970 and the following year the station became simply Lowestoft again. The overall roof was removed in 1992 and, ever since, waiting passengers have had to suffer the strong winds blown across the station, coming in from the North Sea.
