Ulverston Canal Foot Basin and Sea Lock

At first glance the lower sea lock gates of the Ulverston Canal appear to still be in place, but this is actually a concrete dam. This was put in place some time after the 1940s closure. For many years, the canal was owned and maintained by the nearby chemical works to provide an emergency water supply but it has since been handed over to a newly formed Ulverston Canal Company, who now maintain it as a community resource.
