Channel Tunnel Shakespeare Cliff

Marine Running Tunnel North TBM Erection Chamber - a long name for a long cavern. This is where the Tunnel Boring Machine for one of the main railway tunnels was being assembled in 1989. The chamber itself was excavated with the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) approach to design and monitoring. Compare the size of this with the Land Service Tunnel see image 76856. The two construction railway tracks in both images were of the same gauge, 900mm. The overall size of the chamber was, of course, greater than that of the tunnel bored by the completed TBM.
