Bowling Swing Bridge

The former swing bridge that carried the L&D over the western end of the Forth and Clyde Canal at Bowling, crossing the waterway between the upper and lower basins. The bridge, completed in 1896, was notable for its elevated signal box which spanned the lines, as shown at 53358. The box was carried on a steel gantry mounted on the two northern piers, one of which, topped by its four support plinths, stands on the right. Photograph taken in June 2010 looking south from the access road off the A814.
