Woolley Tunnel

Number 5 air shaft over Woolley Tunnel down side bore, is set back in a small compound, between the exit from the lorry park and the southbound carriageway, near the top of the M1 entry slip road from Woolley Edge Services. Vegetation is growing out of the stonework, topping stones have been taken from the ledge where the shaft diameter reduces, and the guard on the top is in poor condition. Out of sight out of mind appears to be the case with this shaft, as with the one, number 6, on higher ground across Bramley Lane and the two, number 7 & 8, further into the woodland beyond, as compared to that directly alongside the slip road from the northbound services.
