Ramsbottom

A once common sight that is very rare now. The signalman at Ramsbottom has released the pedestrian wicket gates and winds the wheel to open the level crossing to road traffic as a passenger train disappears towards Rawtenstall. During the early 1960s this box was open 24/7, apart from a few hours overnight Sunday to Monday, and the line was busy with freight, parcels and passenger trains.
